SCHOOL CORNER Sound of Music offered The Parkrose High School Theatre Department presents its spring musical, the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic The Sound of Music beginning Thursday, May 12. One of the most beloved musicals of all time, it follows the story of a young nun, Maria Agusta Kutschera, as she uses her love of singing to inspire the hearts of the Von Trapp family. Set in pre-World War II Austria, the Von Trapp family must also escape the impending Nazi invasion. The Sound of Music promises to leave the audience with smiles on their faces and songs in their hearts. Possibly on their lips as well. Show dates and times are May 12, 13 and 20 beginning at 7 p.m. and matinees on May 14 and 21 beginning at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens, and are available at 503-408-2621. Tickets can also be purchased at the door one hour before each show. Kindergarten round up planned If you live in the David Douglas school district and have a child entering kindergarten in the fall, your neighborhood school is offering the opportunity to tour the school, meet teachers and the principal, learn about the options available and even take a bus ride. On Friday, May 13 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. all district elementary schools will welcome future students and their parents. If you do not know which school serves your neighborhood call 503-261-6526. After the morning introduction to the school setting parents may register their student for fall classes. It will be necessary to provide the childs birth certificate, immunization records and proof of residence at time of registration. This is an informal event designed to familiarize families with their local school and to get your kindergartener excited about going to school. Childcare will be available for younger siblings. SENIOR RESOURCES Seniors get into wellness There are as many ways to work fitness and health into a daily routine as there are people, and local seniors will check some of them out on National Senior Health and Fitness Day, Wednesday, May 25. CherryWood Village, 1417 S.E. 107th Ave., will serve as an official host site for the day with a Senior Wellness Fair. At 10:00 am, participants will join an estimated 150,000 seniors at more than 1000 locations - all on the same day - as they walk, dance, play, and learn their way to better fitness and health. This free event will offer health screenings, wellness specialists, classes, refreshments, and prizes. Event coordinators have invented imaginative ways to engage seniors in healthy activities and regular exercise. Experts know that even small increases in physical activity can lead to better health. National Senior Health and Fitness Day gives older adults an opportunity to begin or renew a commitment to health and wellness and to celebrate an active senior lifestyle. Erin Rose, wellness director at CherryWood Village, says, We want to demonstrate that physical activity can be fun and that seniors can take charge of their own wellness. It is also a great opportunity for older adults to obtain health information, participate in free health screenings, and connect with local resources in our community. The Surgeon Generals Report on Physical Activity and Health concludes older adults can obtain significant health benefits with a moderate amount of physical activity, preferably daily. Among the benefits are increased endurance, stronger muscles, better balance, and improved function in daily living tasks. Moderate physical activity can also reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, colon cancer, and feelings of depression or anxiety. For more information about the Senior Wellness Fair, please contact Erin Rose at 503-408-0404. Memorial Day observance scheduled Oregon Baptist Retirement Home, 1825 N.E. 108th Ave., will host a special open house in observance of Memorial Day. The event will be held on Friday, May 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be flag-raising ceremony at 11:30 a.m. at the communitys newly installed flagpole. For more information, call 503-255-7160.
