In April, the Portland Christian Royals Chess team sent 16 members to the Super Nationals in Nashville Tenn. to compete in the world’s largest scholastic chess tournament in history recorded with 5270 entries.

Students from 1300 schools in 48 states representing over 600 cities gathered at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center for four days of intense competition with scholarships, trophies and, of course, pride on the line.

National scholastic tournaments are held each year but are divided by location into elementary, middle, and high school events. Every four years all three are gathered at one site for a “Super” National. The 2005 event is the third such event organized by the United States Chess Federation, the governing body for chess in the United States, located in Crossville, Tenn.

The 2A Oregon school competed with schools of all sizes and came away with both team and individual trophies.

The High school team placed sixth overall, the Middle School team captured ninth place. Considering the number of entrants and schools involved, these finishes are a stunning achievement.

Portland Christian Schools is a nondenominational, non-profit organization, comprised of students in grade levels K- 12, as well as the children in Early Childhood Education programs. Portland Christian Jr. and Sr. High School is at 12425 NE San Rafael Street, the phone number is 503-256-3960 ext. 209.
