Mid-county Memo Community Awards set this month RICH RIEGEL THE MID-COUNTY MEMO The Mid-county Memo Community Awards, the event celebrating the best and brightest in Mid-Multnomah County, is set for this month. Friends, neighbors, co-workers, everyone is invited May 10 to attend the gala event. If you are a reader of the Memo, you are invited! Mid-county Memo readers bestowed honors upon those special people and organizations in Mid-Multnomah County who deserve recognition. And to whet your appetite, well tell you in advance who won. Actually, well tell you the names, but not the categories, nor whether someone won a plaque or certificate in the individual categories. Each category will feature a plaque winner as the person or organization singled out as the best in the category. Certificate winners will also be awarded in each category. Plaque and certificate winners will be announced at the awards event on Tuesday, May 10 at the Gateway Elks Lodge, located at 711 N.E. 100th Ave. Therell be a reception at 6 p.m., with the awards ceremony beginning at 7 p.m. Master of ceremonies for the event will be Anna Song, reporter and anchorwoman with KATU-TV. Also on hand, to help present the awards, will be Oregon State. Rep. Jeff Merkley, who represents District 47. The sponsor of the event is MBank. The following is a list of both the plaque and certificate winners for the 2005 Mid-county Memo Community Awards. To find out if the person is a plaque winner or certificate winner, and in what category, youll have to attend the awards ceremony on May 10. Winners include Bonny McKnight, Elizabeth Webber, Alesia Reese, Rebekah Thompson, Linh Bui, Teresa Hatfield, Leann Rowlett, Pat Dragowsky, Rev. Yoon Cho, Father Jack Mosbrucker, Florence Lersch, Al Garre, Joe Rossi, Angelique Kauffman, Bob Walker, John Thompson, Dorothy Beal, Deshante Bolds, Ron Linn, Lynzy Klein, John Carpenter, Vroman Willingham, Charles Harris Jr., Tom Knight, Betty Riley, Richard Robb and Teena Ainslie. Other winners include Judith Huck, Dixie Ann Winter, Tony Bosboom, Rod Martin, Mark Gardner, Allison Newman-Woods, Amy Salvador, Jim Lipscomb, Arlene Kimura, Bobbie Aden, John Di Pasquale, Jeff Rose, Lesley McKinnon, Caysie Torrey, Linda Owasaki, Parkrose Lions Club, Edward Linares, Ted Tran, Rev. Bill Taylor, Clare and Sharon Mershon, Janelle Singleton, Michael Taylor, Bruce Altizer, Steve Williams, Linda Robinson, Ross Monn, and Clare and Sharon Mershon. Nominees to be honored this month were selected exclusively by readers of the Memo. By using the nominating ballot included in past issues of the Memo, readers selected friends, co-workers, acquaintances and even family members for a variety of awards. A list of nominees was selected from returned ballot forms. Awards were granted based on quantity of responses and the quality of the contribution. This is the seventh time the event has been held. It was also held in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994 and 2000. Categories include Student of the Year, Employee of the Year, Religious Leader of the Year, Agri-Business Person of the Year, Artist of the Year, Athlete of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Businessperson of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Educator of the Year, Cook of the Year, Boss of the Year and Neighbor of the Year. There is also the Special Commendation award, meant for a person living or working in the Mid-County area who has performed a heroic act or special service to the community. The Leadership Award will be awarded to the individual who has provided leadership in solving problems in Mid-County. The Neighborhood Beautification Award will honor a group or individual from any part of the city of Portland whose efforts have helped beautify the Mid-County area. In addition, the Environmental Preservation Award will go to the Mid-Multnomah County group or individual who best displays a sincere caring for the natural environment. The award was created in 1992 in honor of the ongoing work of environmental and neighborhood activist Alice Blatt. The Mid-county Memo Community Awards Committee, an awards selection committee made up of a cross section of Mid-County business and community leaders, met in late April to choose the winners. Members of the Awards Committee included SnowCap Executive Director Judy Alley; the former pastor at Parkrose Community United Church of Christ, Charlie Ross; East Portland Neighborhood Office Coordinator Richard Bixby; Rev. Bill Taylor of New Life-Eastminster Presbyterian Church; and Rod Martin, chairman of the Parkrose School District board of directors.
