City summit encourages walking
More and more Portland neighbors are discovering walking is the best way to get around, get exercise, and meet neighbors. Sometimes a walking experience can be enhanced with a simple path connection or just letting more people know where to find those great walking streets and trails.

With budgets shrinking, city and regional governments rely on area residents to take matters in their own hands and organize and implement improvements for pedestrians.

The Portland Office of Transportation, Southwest Neighbors, Inc and Southwest Trail Group, will present interactive and practical workshops designed to get you and your neighborhoods on a path to getting things done for pedestrians.

Mayor Tom Potter will be on hand at what is being billed as Pedestrian Summit II on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Multnomah Community Arts Center, 7688 S.W. Capitol Highway.

Topics will include developing a shared community vision; how to get started and how to build paths and trails with your neighbors; recruiting volunteers and getting them to come back; creative solutions to knotty pedestrian problems and walking groups, either joining in or start your own.

This may be the opportunity you have been looking for to make a difference in your neighborhood.

Register at www.PortlandTransportation.org/ Pedestrians/Summit2.htm. Registration deadline is Sept. 3.

Soroptimists monthly meeting dates set
A service organization for business and professional women, Soroptimist International of Portland East, meets twice a month to discuss ways to benefit the community. Monday, Sept. 12 and 26 at 6 p.m. at Sayler’s Old Country Kitchen, Southeast 105th Avenue and Stark Street is your opportunity to find out who and what Soroptimists are about.
