To celebrate the new school year, the Community Skills Center is offering a “2 for 1” special.

Enroll for one non-credit computer class at the Maywood Park Center, Northeast 102nd Avenue and Prescott Street, and you can sign up a friend for free, or take a second class at no cost.

Call 503-491-6122 for additional information.

Class offers tips and tools for caregivers
Mt. Hood Community College offers a unique class this fall designed especially for those who provide support for individuals who cannot care for themselves.

The class, titled “Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” is an educational program designed to help caregivers take care of themselves while also caring for another. Students providing the needs of a parent, spouse, friend or client will benefit from this class, whether the patient is at home, in an assisted living or nursing facility, or half way across the country.

“Powerful Tools for Caregivers” will be offered this fall on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 220 at the MHCC Maywood Park campus, located at 10100 N.E. Prescott St. Class size is limited and registration is required.

This class is free of charge with an optional book available for purchase at $22. Books will be distributed during the first class.

Fall registration is now open and these popular classes fill up fast. To reserve your spot, call 503-491-7571.

People requiring accommodations due to a disability should contact the MHCC Disability Services Office at 503-491-6923 or 503-491-7670 (TDD).

Regional cooking art explored
Are you curious about foods from other parts of the country? This fall, Mt. Hood Community College is offering a variety of gourmet cooking classes that will explore dishes from New England, Pennsylvania, Louisiana and Texas.

Come hungry to “Regional Cuisine: Down East Yankee,” where students learn to prepare comfort food at its best. Instructor Larry Johnson will teach basic, age-old techniques for preparing clam and corn chowders, Yankee pot roast and succotash in a class on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

On Tuesday, Oct. 11, Johnson will move west with a class called “Regional Cuisine: Pennsylvania Dutch.” Learn the secrets of Amish and Dutch dishes such as chicken corn soup with rivels (a dumpling) and pork sauerkraut with bacon dressing.

For those interested in the spicier flavors of Louisiana’s Cajun and Creole recipes, Johnson offers a class that explores cuisine from this most colorful area of the country. Discover how to make Shrimp Creole, Crawfish Etouffee and Jambalaya that explode with southern flavors.

All three classes run from 6 to 9 p.m. in Room CN177 at Centennial High School, 3505 S.E. 182nd Ave. The cost for each class is $34. Fall registration is now open. To reserve your spot, call 503-491-7571.

People requiring accommodations due to a disability should contact the MHCC Disability Services Office at 503-491-6923 or 503-491-7670 (TDD).
