Local accountants join Gateway firm
Robin L. Gulde, CPA and Lisa A. Ortquist, CPA announce the firm of Gulde & Ortquist, PC has welcomed Joanna Arthur and her firm JA Financial and Tax Services to join its team.

The combined firm will provide accounting, tax and consulting services to family businesses and individuals. Both practices employ computer hardware and software that allows for the preparation of individual income tax returns in a paperless environment. Utilizing scanning and e-filing technology, 75 percent less paper is generated consuming far less natural resources. Clients receive a bound presentation copy of their return along with a CD version of their returns and source documents in Adobe Acrobat format. Clients have told Ortquist that the CD is very handy to retrieve copies of returns or documents such as W-2’s. Personally, Ortquist has found that this technology allows her to have more one-on-one time with her clients.

In addition, both firms have been leaders in electronic income tax filing. According to Gulde, filing errors and problems are much reduced with this method. He also feels the greater security and a fast refund is very appealing to clients.

Both firms feel that the common practice methods of the firms will provide an extremely smooth transition for staff members as well as clients.

Gulde & Ortquist, PC’s phone number is 503-261-9608 and is located at 11160 N.E. Halsey St. in the Gateway District. Targeting the service, construction and retail industries, Gulde & Ortquist, PC is able to provide valued personal service that goes far beyond basic tax functions. Gulde & Ortquist is focused on the needs of small business and individuals.

Trapold Farms’ The Barn stays
Readers of the Memo may have noticed some fierce construction activity going on around Northeast 148th Avenue and Marine Drive. The Memo went to two sources to discover the truth of the matter.

The property, located north of Trapold Farms’ The Barn at 5211 N.E. 148th Ave., between The Barn and Northeast Marine Drive, west of 148th Avenue, has been sold to ProLogis.

ProLogis is a provider of distribution facilities and services, with more than 2,300 facilities, owned, managed and under development in North America, Europe and Asia. The firm, with offices locally, is the largest industrial developer in the country specializing in distribution warehouse development.

But one concept must be made perfectly clear. “The Barn isn’t going anywhere,” said Sheila Trapold, who owns and runs The Barn and Trapold Farms, along with her husband Tom Trapold. The Barn continues to offer the best in produce from June through November.

Sheila Trapold said that she and her husband had to sell the property, due to the passing of Tom’s mother Elly Trapold in June 2003.

“But that doesn’t mean we’re slowing down,” Sheila Trapold said. “Tell your readers we are still in business, and to stop by to see us during our open season.”

The name of the new development will be ProLogis Park PDX, with four buildings planned for the site.

A representative from ProLogis locally said the size of the development would be approximately 30 acres. The former Trapold property makes up about 27 acres, with the remaining three acres coming from a separate seller.

That same official said that the buildings would be dedicated primarily to distribution, with some manufacturing. The firm already owns and operates several distribution warehouses in Portland.

The first two buildings, at 131,690 and 68,245 square feet, are under construction now and will be completed in April.

The two other buildings will be 83,350 and 246,000 square feet. There is no proposed start date for construction or completion of the two buildings.

Fitness center adds herbal products
A new shop offering a full range of herbal products and services will open inside the Slim and Tone Women’s Fitness Center on Northeast 114th Avenue and Halsey Street. The Herb Shop will sell vitamins, minerals and essential oils and offer private consultations, support groups and classes designed to educate the uninitiated.

An open house beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, will feature specials throughout the day. Visitors can sign-up to win a free personal training session, free herbal products or a free one-month Slim and Tone membership.

Beginning this month, Slim and Tone is open at 6 a.m. To learn about the programs offered or to find out more about The Herb Shop, call Michelle Craver at 503-255-1843.
