Church opens doors for community prayer
Woodland Park Baptist Church, 11375 N.E. Halsey St., will host a National Day of Prayer event on Thursday, May 4. The doors will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for those who would like to come and pray. A special prayer service with flag presentation will be held at noon.
You are invited to join the congregation as members honor God and pray for our leaders, schools, churches, families, media and the military.
Celebrate Mother's Day at The Grotto
The sixth annual Mother's Day Brunch Buffet will be held at The Grotto on Sunday, May 14. With the gardens in glorious spring bloom and an elegant buffet brunch in an incredibly beautiful setting, The Grotto offers a wonderfully peaceful way to enjoy the day.
The event will he held in the conference center. Seating times are available from 11 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. The cost is $21 per person. Children five and under are free. Tickets must be purchased by May 10. Reservations can be made in person at The Grotto, Northeast 85th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard, or by phone at 503-254-7371.
There will also be a special Mother's Day Mass at noon outdoors at Our Lady's Grotto in the central plaza, or in case of bad weather, in the Chapel of Mary.
FUNDRAISERS
Students propagate native plants for sale
There will be a native plant sale at Midland Park on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This small natural park is located at Southeast 122nd Avenue and Morrison Street, behind the Midland Library.
Janes Park Group, Midland Library, and Portland Parks sponsor the event.
Most of the plants to be sold have been propagated by students at Parkrose High School or cared for by students at Ventura Park Elementary School. The proceeds from these plants will go to support the Environmental Projects Class at Parkrose High and the Green School Program at Ventura Park Elementary.
Celebrate an early Mothers Day will your Mom and support our local students at the same time.
There will also be some plants donated by members of Jane's Park group and other organizations. The proceeds from the sale of these plants will be used to cover the costs of the sale, and to improve the habitat for birds and butterflies at Midland Park.

Boosters collect bottles and cans
It is no fun dragging empty beverage containers to the local grocery store and putting them into the collection machines. The Parkrose Bronco Boosters will take care of this messy task for you. Simply swing by Parkrose Middle School, 11800 N.E. Shaver St., on the first Saturday of each month. Volunteers are on hand from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. to collect those returnable bottles and cans. They will be there Saturday, May 6, rain or shine.
The money raised benefits Parkrose High School students.

Savory fundraiser will send students to Europe
Michele Gibson, who coordinates the English language learner program at Parkrose High School and Lisa Van Nice, a counselor at Parkrose Middle School will take a group of students to Italy and France this summer.
To help foot the bill, you are invited to savor an authentic Tuscan meal at Tucci Restaurant, 220 A Ave. in Lake Oswego on Monday, May 15. Please make your tax-deductible donation of $50 per person payable to Michele Gibson.

Kiwanis host spring yard sale
The annual spring yard sale hosted by Russellville Kiwanis Club is set for Saturday, June 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Glenfair Elementary School, Northeast 153rd Avenue and Glisan Street. All kinds of great stuff will be on sale. Proceeds will be distributed to helping agencies in our community. The club supports such organizations as Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp for Children and Adults with Disabilities, SnowCap, DayBreak Homeless Family Shelter, Ronald McDonald House and more.

Shaver hosts Ice Cream Social, plans fundraiser for library books
The Shaver Elementary School Parent Faculty Association is busy gearing up for its largest annual fund-raiser. On Wednesday, June 7, at 6:30 pm, Shaver Elementary School will play host to students, parents and the community at its annual Ice Cream Social. This year, the SPFA has added Bingo for Books a fun addition with lots of great prizes donated by generous Parkrose area businesses and organizations. The Shaver library will use funds raised to replace tattered and outdated books.
There will be a bouncy slide, face painting and other activities to entertain the kids.
SPFA wants to share this fun night with the entire community. It will be a great opportunity to mingle with the kids, enjoy a fun night and learn more about the little school on the hill.

Committee seeks volunteers, announces ticket sales
The David Douglas High Senior All Night Party committee is in the home stretch. Organizers say they are grateful for community support received thus far. There is, of course, work still to be done.
Parents are needed to help with the spring hanging basket sale, ticket sales before school and during lunch breaks and as party chaperones. The best way to get in touch with them is via e-mail at ddhs_senior_all.night@yahoo.com.
Parents are also invited to purchase an ad in the memory book. A full page (7.75x10) is $50, a half page (7.75x4.875) is $25 and a quarter page (3.625x4.875) is$15. Crisp, clean photocopies must be submitted to the All Night Party Committee at the high school no later than May 16. No originals will be returned.
Seniors should be aware that tickets for the all night party go on sale soon. Parental release forms will be made available at the same time.
Hospitality and tourism program to host dinner and auction
Food fit for a Roman emperor will be the highlight of the Mt. Hood Community College Hospitality and Tourism Management 15th Annual Gala Dinner and Silent Wine Auction, A Toast to Roman Cuisine.
This years gourmet dinner will feature exquisite Italian dishes prepared by renowned Executive Chef Paul Ornstein. The chef is well known for his work at Basilico, Pazzos and Southpark restaurants. He has studied at a cooking school in Tuscany, the better to tempt diners with authentic Italian fare.
The reception will feature a Northwest wine tasting with a selection of special hors doeuvres. The silent auction will include hotel packages, airline tickets, restaurant gift certificates and bottles of wine from a number of wine shops and wineries from around the Northwest.
As the only Hospitality and Tourism program fundraiser of the year, the purpose of this event is to raise funds for scholarships, program materials and off-campus educational activities.
Reception, dinner, auction, all beverages and service will cost $60 per person. The dinner will be held on Saturday, May 6. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. and will be held on the Gresham campus of MHCC, 26000 S.E. Stark St., in the Town and Gown Room.
