Tradition continues at Horner
Each spring the David Douglas Theatre Department presents the Senior-Directed One Act Festival. This crowd favorite is set for May 3, 4, 5 and 6 at the Horner Performing Arts Center, 1400 S.E. 130th Ave. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. For details and to reserve seats, please call 503-261-8270.
Artistic talent to be displayed
The David Douglas High School Art Show will be held May 1830. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the district office breezeway, 1500 S.E. 130th Ave.
Students will perform at dance recital
The dance students at David Douglas High School, Alice Ott Middle School and Ron Russell Middle School will present a spring recital on Wednesday, May 24 at 7 p.m. in the south gym located at 1500 S.E. 130th Ave. Tickets are $3 for adults, $2 for students and senior citizens. Children 5 and under are free.

Its Fun-O-Rama time
The annual Golf-O-Rama tournament signals the beginning of Fun-O-Rama in the Gateway community.
The Gateway Area Business Association sponsors this event each May.
On Saturday, May 13 golfers will tee off beginning at 9 a.m. at Glendoveer Golf Course, 14015 N.E. Glisan St., to play cash and prizes. The entry fee is $50 per person. Call Karen Montez at 503-252-6241 to register.
On Saturday morning, May 20 at 10:30 the Fun-O-Rama parade gets underway. Grab a seat along the curb on Northeast Halsey Street between 122nd and 102nd to catch the fun. Entries will include equestrian groups, car clubs, drill teams and neighborhood kids on bikes. For a parade entry form, contact Pam Colton at 503-251-7519.
Asfter the parade, head over to the Community Fair at 111th Square on Northeast 111th Avenue and Halsey Street. Gateway merchants as well as the city of Portland Police, Portland Fire & Rescue and community groups will offer food, games, prizes and entertainment. Admission is free. The fair begins at noon and will run until 3:30 p.m.
Dump your junk, grab a donut
Argay neighborhood residents can get rid of debris and help the Parkrose High Water Polo team too. Saturday, May 20 is the annual Argay May Clean-Up day from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Members of the Argay Neighborhood Association and neighborhood volunteers will be at Shaver Elementary School, 3701 N.E. 131st Place, to help you dispose of yard debris, furniture, metal, glass, paper, appliances and tires. They cannot take hazardous or toxic waste or food waste.
Dump fees are $6 per car or trunk load and $12 per truck or trailer load. Clean up is for Argay residents only and is first come first served. Once the dumpsters are full, collection will stop.
The PHS Water Polo Team will offer fuel in the form of donuts and coffee for a small fee. If the weather is nice, they will wash your car, also for a small fee.

Learn about alternative medical techniques
If you're interested in getting well and staying healthy, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine can help. Start off right by attending OCOM's two free Saturday Seminars for the public on May 6 and 13. Attendees will learn how to use traditional Chinese medicine to get well and stay healthy.
Traditional Chinese medical techniques discussed at these seminars were developed over centuries in China. They can be helpful not only in easing the symptoms associated with seasonal allergies and muscle pain, but also in boosting the immune system to help keep you healthy.
The seminar on May 6 will focus on acupuncture and Chinese medicinal herbs. Sample acupuncture treatments will be offered, and herbal teas will be available for tasting.
On May 13 there will be a presentation on Oriental massage and qigong (chee-gong). Attendees will learn how massage and simple meditative exercise can reduce stress ease aches and pains, and support healthy living.
Each Saturday seminar starts at 10 a.m. and lasts for 90 minutes. The seminars are free, but space is limited. To reserve your place, call 503-253-3443 ext. 550. The OCOM Acupuncture & Herbal Clinic, 10541 S.E. Cherry Blossom Drive, is located on the OCOM campus near Mall 205.
Car club draws classics to Jim Dandy Drive-In
The Road Knights Cruise-In begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 20 at Jim Dandy Drive-In, 9626 N.E. Sandy Blvd. Music will fill the air as owners of classic cars, and trucks and hot rods vie for trophies. Raffle prizes will be awarded throughout the day. Vehicle registration is $10. Enjoy tours of botanical garden
Leach Botanical Garden will feature a theme for its weekly Saturday morning public tours. The first Saturday of each month will continue to be the Gardeners Tour led by Leach Botanical Gardens Garden Steward, Scotty Fairchild.
Garden volunteers leading the remaining Saturday tours at 10 a.m. will focus on rock gardens and wild lilies in May and the riparian garden in June.
Leach Botanical Garden is located at 6704 SE 122nd Ave. Admission is free.

Become a wetland expert
The Columbia Slough Watershed Council will offer its Wetlands 101 Workshop on Thursday May 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 13 from 9 a.m. until noon. This two-part seminar is designed to give both a classroom and a hands-on introduction to wetland functions, values and assessment tools. There is a $10 fee.

Childrens nature fair upcoming
Come to Portlands only public botanical garden for a day of fun and learning for the whole family. Visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to learn about pollinators, hear wonderful storytelling prepared just for Leach Botanical Garden, make wood cookies, origami flowers and pine cone critters. You can learn about beneficial insects and take home a few ladybugs or take part in a treasure hunt to learn about native plants and bird species in the garden.
This event, which runs all day on Saturday, May 13, features educational activities geared for kids of all ages. A $1 donation is per child requested. The garden is located at 6704 S.E. 122nd Ave.

Norwegians throw a party
On Wednesday, May 17, the city's large Norwegian community will celebrate the adoption of the second oldest written constitution in the world on Norway's Constitution Day or Syttende Mai (set-na-MY). The festivities begin at 4 p.m., are sponsored by Portland's Sons of Norway Grieg Lodge and held at the historic Norse Hall, 111 N.E. 11th Ave. In keeping with tradition, the day will include a grand flag parade at 6 p.m. through the Lloyd District featuring marchers in native costume, Norwegian fjord horses and a marching band. Authentic Norwegian foods will be available along with a children's folkdance performance, Nordic music and storytelling, and a variety of children's games and activities throughout Norse Hall. Honorary Norwegian Consul Larry Bruun will be in attendance.
