It has been 36 years in the making, but the Portland Christian Royals baseball team has a chance at winning its second league title in school history. Led by a solitary senior, three juniors, a hefty sophomore, and a new coaching staff, the unranked Royals are near the top of the Northwest League, which they won once, in 1970.
The backbone of the team only stands a mere 5 4. Senior Tyler Nicholson has been doing it all for the Royals this season, both on the mound and at the plate. Nicholson, the only senior on the youthful team, is 5-1 on the year, with his sole loss coming on a game where the Royals had more than 10 errors. Batting over .400 on the year, Nicholson has helped himself out with over 15 stolen bases. After spending his junior season at Heritage High School in Washington, the diminutive co-captain has been the motor for the Royals machine.
Co-captain junior Alex Lemieux has been pulling double-duty as catcher and as the Royals number two hurler. With a 3-0 record on the hill this season, Lemieux has also been alive at the plate, hitting over .400 and leading the team in RBIs.
The cream of the junior class crop, however, is returning 1st team all-league player Charlie Antal. After struggling at the beginning of the season, Antal has picked up the pace and returned to last years form, leading the team in home runs. I was getting a little worried, admitted Lemieux about Antals early season slump, but he has turned it around in a big way. The third junior, Troy Hernandez has added some spark to the Royals season. In an 11-inning marathon game against the Vernonia Loggers, Hernandez hit a walk-off home run to win the game 11-10.
Despite a junior class that is loaded with talent, its sophomore Greg Thompson leading the Royals in batting average. With a handful of long balls, Thompson is having a sensational sophomore season.
The Royals have been the beneficiaries of new Head Coach Nate Greens coaching style. Assistant coach and college teammate of Green, Sean Hammond, brings baseball intelligence while riding co-pilot. With the combination of the two, the Royals have a great chance to add to the League Championship banner that hangs in the school gym. With four of their final six games against two ranked divisional opponents, the Knappa Loggers and Warrenton Warriors, well see if Portland Christian is living up to its nickname and plays like baseball royalty. No matter what happens to end their season, theyve already had a great 2006. Portland Christian Middle and Senior High School, located in Mid-county at the site of the former Parkrose Heights Junior High School, 12425 N.E. San Rafael St., enrolls over 400 students annually.
