Retirement community announces public events
On Wednesday, May 24, CherryWood Village, 1417 S.E. 107th Ave., will host a free Senior Wellness Symposium that is open to the public. At 10 a.m. Sherrie Evanson, an exercise physiologist will discuss dementia and exercise, and at 11:30 a.m. Erin Rose will talk about balance and fall prevention.
There will be healthy cooking demonstrations, free cookbooks, a senior art exhibit, free balance screenings, raffle drawings, a free senior benefits exercise class with a longevity wellness specialist and free rejuvenating chair massages. You are invited to bring your friends. All public guests will receive three free visits to the Wellness Center. Call the CherryWood Village Wellness Center 503-408-0404 for more information.
National Senior Health and Fitness Day is Wednesday, May 31. In celebration of the day, CherryWood Village has arranged for a panel of retired and practicing health and fitness professionals, enthusiasts and specialists to share its knowledge at 11 a.m. in the boardroom. This will be a fun and educational time to learn about the history of fitness, how it's impacted Americans over the last century, and what the professionals predict for the future. There will be a 100-year American fitness timeline on display, a Joe Loprinzi and Phyllis Diller fitness video, and plenty of time for questions and answers. Later that day, at 1 p.m., guests will gather on the garden patio for an hour of pet therapy with the Dove Lewis Emergency Pet Hospital and their Pet Therapy Volunteers. Flag raising ceremony to celebrate Memorial Day
Refreshments will be served during a special flag-raising ceremony and program honoring armed forces personnel, past and present, on Friday, May 26 from 10 a.m. until noon. The Memorial Day Observance and Flag Raising Ceremony will be at Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes, 1825 N.E. 108th Ave. Community members are invited to attend and to wear service uniforms and bring military memorabilia to add to the display.
This will also be a great opportunity to tour the campus and learn of the independent and assisted living options there.

Trees, parks and clean up - your neighborhood at work
There is a skate park in the works in the Madison South neighborhood. A water bureau property is being transformed into a park in Hazelwood. Friends of Trees volunteers planted trees in Parkrose and Argay last spring. These positive additions to our neighborhoods come about largely through the efforts of our neighborhood associations. The East Portland Neighborhood Office can help you determine which association serves you. The general membership of Madison South Neighborhood Association meets Thursday, May 4, at Banfield Pet Hospital Corporate Headquarters, 8000 N.E. Tillamook St., at 7 p.m. There is a neighborhood clean up planned for Saturday, May 13. Call EPNO to learn more.
The annual EPNO service area neighborhood clean up is Saturday, May 6. For a nominal fee you can get rid of appliances, furniture, metal, tires and yard debris. Food waste, hazardous materials or commercial waste will not be accepted. Dumpsters will be staged at the Tri-Met Park-N-Ride Lot, Southeast 122nd Avenue and Burnside Street, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The entrance is on Ash Street. The Centennial Community Association general meeting is Monday, May 8 at 7 p.m., in Room 65 at Harold Oliver Intermediate School.
The Montavilla Community Center, 8219 N.E. Glisan St., is the site of the Monday, May 8, meeting of the Montavilla Community Association. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
On Tuesday, May 9, the Mill Park Neighborhood Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. at Midland Library, 805 S.E. 122nd Ave.
The Wilkes Community Group general meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9, at the Teamsters Complex, 1850 N.E. 162nd Ave.
The Tuesday, May 16, general membership meeting of the Parkrose Neighborhood Association will begin at 7 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 11100 N.E. Skidmore.
Members of the Argay Neighborhood Association will meet on Tuesday, May 16 at 7 p.m., at Fire Station 2, 4800 N.E. 122nd Ave. Two guest speakers are on the agenda. The city forester will discuss the advantages of adding trees to the neighborhood, and Ross Caron will talk about home-based businesses. A July garage sale is being planned, and information about a neighborhood-wide clean up on Saturday, May 20, will be available as well.
The Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors board will meet on Tuesday, May 16 at 7 p.m., at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. Knott St.
Kiwanis wants you
Community members are invited to attend a meeting of the Russellville Kiwanis. Meetings are held every Wednesday from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. at Russellville Park, Southeast 103rd Avenue and Burnside Street. New members are always welcome. So much so, the club will buy your lunch on that first visit.
A board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3. On May 10, get to know Judy Alley, the executive director of SnowCap Community Charities. Celestia Bue will share Aussie Scenes on May 17.
