Health fair on tap for mid-county residents
Mt. Hood Community College and the Gresham Rotary Club are bringing health care professionals and resources together to provide underserved families of the community with health education and services.

Local dentists, physicians and opticians from the Gresham Rotary Club are joining MHCC Dental Hygiene students and volunteers from the community to provide health care information and services. The Gresham Rotary Health Fair will be held on the college campus Saturday, May 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Services for children from four to twelve years of age will include dental, orthodontic and vision screenings, immunization information and resources and preventative and urgent dental care for those children who qualify. Information on a variety of health care topics for the entire family will also be available. Each child will receive a goodie bag that includes a toothbrush and toothpaste and information about taking care of their teeth and gums.

Rotary Club members and students from the Center for Advanced Learning will also play a major role in this volunteer effort. The Multnomah Dental Society has helped to organize the event.

The Health Fair will be held at the Allied Health wing of MHCC located at the north end of the Gresham campus at 26000 S.E. Stark. St.

Fun-O-Rama on tap
Northeast Halsey Street between 125th and 102nd Avenues will be abuzz with activity on the morning of Saturday, May 14. That's when the a neighborhood parade will take place.

After the parade the Gateway Area Business Association will host a community fair at Northeast 111th Avenue and Halsey from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Clean out the attic, the basement, and the garage
The Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors wants folks living in their boundaries to know the neighborhood-wide garage sale will be Saturday June 4, 9 a.m. until everything is gone.

Members of PHAN will coordinate the sale. They will purchase ads to run in The Oregonian on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 2 through 4. The ad will include clear directions and instructions about how to obtain PHAN Neighborhood-wide Garage sale maps. PHAN boundaries are roughly from 1-84 to Northeast Halsey Street and between Northeast 102nd and 122nd Avenues.

To be included on the map, you must register with the event organizers before May 20. For a $15 registration fee, you get your address on the map, your sale items listed and an official lawn sign. The registration fees pay for the ads, maps and signs. Any money left over will support the PHAN National Night Out in July. All proceeds from your sale are yours to keep.

Argay schedules annual clean up
On Saturday, May 21, Argay residents may dump garbage and yard debris at collections stations set up at Shaver Elementary School, 3701 N.E. 131st Place. The annual neighborhood clean-up event sponsored by the Argay Neighborhood Association is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A modest fee will be charged.

Classic cars come to Parkrose
Jim Dandy Drive-In, 9626 N.E. Sandy Blvd., will once again host the Road Knights Cruise-In.

The tenth version of this open event will take place on Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature dash plaques, raffle prizes, music and awards. The entry fee is $10. For more information, call 360-254-9296 or 503-760-6561.

Annual East Portland clean-up date set
The East Portland Neighborhood Office will once again give residents the opportunity to dispose of appliances, furniture, metal, tires and yard debris at a convenient location. Dumpsters will be on site at the TriMet Park and Ride on Southeast 122nd Avenue and East Burnside Street on Saturday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Food waste, hazardous materials, commercial waste, or debris from outside the EPNO service area will not be accepted. The EPNO Service area is approximately everything East of I-205 and within the Portland City limits. Please be aware that only one pickup load of debris will be accepted per household.

The following fees will be collected:
• Yard Debris $15 per pickup load
• Passenger Vehicle Tires $2 if off rim, $4 if on rim (Limit 5 per household)
• Old Furniture, Appliances $5 minimum, $30 per pickup load
• Monitors and TV's $10 each

If fees are a hardship, they can be waived by calling 503-823-4550 prior to the cleanup.

Free training for urban forest advocates
Friends of Trees invites all who are interested in caring for newly planted trees this summer or in learning how to organize tree plantings in their neighborhoods this fall to attend the following training events. The trainings are free, but pre-registration is required.

On Saturday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. participants will learn how to assess the health of recently planted street and yard trees and how to instruct homeowners in proper tree care, including guidance in watering, weeding and mulching. During the summer, Tree Team volunteers make two visits to each tree planted through Friends of Trees' Neighborhood Trees program during the previous planting season.

Participants in the Neighborhood Coordinator training on Saturday, June 11 will learn how to organize tree plantings in their neighborhoods during the upcoming planting season, which is from November 2005 to April 2006. Neighborhood Coordinators encourage neighbors to participate in the planting, help them select and order the right tree for the right place, assist in filing permits to plant the trees, and make arrangements for hole digging prior to planting day. This session runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Friends of Trees is celebrating its 15th anniversary planting season of inspiring community stewardship by bringing people in the Portland and Vancouver areas together to plant, care for, and learn about city trees. If you're thinking about dumping the winter blahs, Portland Parks & Recreation is ready to help.
"Recreation centers not only offer Portlanders the best deal in the city for getting fit, but they also offer a range of specialized classes that allow the entire family to work out under one roof," said Parks & Recreation director Zari Santner.

Portland's recreation centers offer facilities comparable to many private gyms, including swimming pools, fitness equipment, weight rooms, aerobic studios, and basketball courts. Special classes, which are offered at many centers, allow adults the chance to test new workout techniques of learn a new sport.
