Musical theater
David Douglas High School’s Performing Arts Department will present the Broadway hit “My Fair Lady” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, Dec. 9, 10 and 11 at 7:30.

Performances take place at the Horner Performing Arts Center, 1400 S.E. 130th Ave. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. Call 503-261-8270 for tickets or ticket information.

This production features a cast of almost 70 performers, over 30 orchestra members comprised exclusively of DDHS students from the band and orchestra departments, with backstage work from over 30 students. The production is conducted by Christopher Silva, vocally directed by Molly Fazio and technically directed by Mark Taylor. The costume designer is Judy LeCoq and the director is Jesse Merz.

“My Fair Lady,” one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time, follows the story of Eliza Doolittle. Upper class accents expert Henry Higgins tries to transform Eliza, the street flower seller, into a proper speaking Duchess. The musical features such popular songs as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “The Rain in Spain” and “With a Little Bit of Luck.”

“My Fair Lady” was created by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe and was honored with six Tony Awards in 1957.

This is sure to be a special treat for the whole family. Call now to hold seats.

Santa’s breakfast
The students, teachers and staff of Sacramento Elementary School have cooked up a special treat for their families, friends and neighbors.

Sacramento Elementary School is located at 11400 N.E. Sacramento St. The fun begins at 8 a.m. and will last until 11 a.m. There will be a $3 per person charge or a maximum of $15 per family for breakfast.

Music of the season
The Performing Arts Center at Parkrose High School will be the venue for two special holiday music presentations. Because the hall seats 600, friends, family and the community at large are invited to watch and listen as PHS music students create holiday magic.

On Monday, Dec. 13 the Parkrose Choir takes the stage at 7 p.m. and on Tuesday, Dec. 14 the Parkrose Band will perform.

The choir will also perform at The Grotto, Northeast 85th Avenue and Sandy Blvd., at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12.

For more information, contact the PHS Performing Arts Center at 503-408-2600.

Financial aid workshops
Parkrose High School students and their families have two opportunities to learn more about college financial aid this month. Both events are free and neither require pre-registration.

The first event is “Financial Aid Night for Seniors,” slated for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9 in the Community Meeting Room at the high school, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. Financial Aid Night features a presentation by a financial aid officer from a Portland college. Parents and seniors will gain a general understanding of the national financial aid process, as well as specific knowledge about how to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA forms will be available to PHS seniors for the first time at Financial Aid Night.

On the following Monday, Dec. 13, the ASPIRE program is hosting a two-hour workshop entitled “Paying for College.” The 3 to 5 p.m. workshop is open to juniors, seniors, parents and all ASPIRE students. ASPIRE is a college-prep program, linking trained community volunteers with college-bound students at Parkrose High. “We are thrilled to have Jim Eddy from the Center for Student Success as our workshop leader,” says Teena Ainslie, the ASPIRE program developer. “He was the director of financial aid at Willamette University and now runs a program to help families learn how to access financial aid wisely.” The Center for Student Success, which opened its Lloyd Center area office this fall, is operated by the nonprofit Northwest Education Loan Association, one of several agencies nationwide that administer the federal student loan program and guarantee the loans against default.
