Memo Calendar (continued) FUNDRAISERS Greens and things On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Leach Garden Friends will be holding their 19th annual Holiday Bazaar, Time for Mistletoe and Holly, at Leach Botanical Garden. A wide variety of fresh greens will be available in bulk, along with wreaths, swags, centerpieces, cones and dried flowers. There will also be handcrafted items and a gift shop. Get in to the spirit of the season, stroll the winter garden and sip hot cider in the historic Leach Garden Manor. Admission is free. The Garden is located at 6704 S.E. 122nd Ave., just south of Foster Road. All proceeds benefit the programs and maintenance of the Gardens botanical collection of over 3000 species and cultivars. Toss your cans and bottles As usual, representatives of the Parkrose Boosters will be hanging out at Parkrose Middle School, rain or shine, to accept your returnable cans and bottles. Back home with Michael Allen Harrison Begin your holiday season, Back Home, enjoying the genius and flair of Michael Allen Harrison. Pianist and composer Harrison returns to his high school alma mater for a benefit concert, hosted by the Parkrose High School A Cappella Choir. The performance begins at 2 p.m. on Dec. 4 in the Parkrose High School Theater, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. Advance tickets are $12.50 for adults, $10 for seniors and students. Remember a loved one and support hospice Community members are invited to dedicate an ornament in honor of a person important to them or in memory of a loved one through the annual Providence Hospice Light Up A Life ceremony. Providence Hospice, a non-profit end-of-life care program that uses a multidisciplinary team approach to providing physical, emotional and spiritual support to the entire family. With each donation to the Hospice Holiday Tree, the name of the person being honored or remembered will be inscribed on a heart-shaped ornament and will be placed on the tree. The names will be read during a special ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Providence Portland Medical Center, 4805 N.E. Glisan St. The funds that are raised will be used toward equipment and services that are not covered through insurance. Contribution brochures are available in the gift shops at all Providence Portland-area locations or by calling Providence Hospice at 503-215-4691. Recognition ceremonies will be held at the other Providence locations in the area as well. Call to find out more. CHURCHES Festival helps with gift giving The Create-A-Gift Advent Festival on Saturday, Dec. 4 is a unique gift to the community - the opposite of a bazaar or sale. During this one-day event volunteers at Gethsemane Lutheran Church help people of all ages to create inexpensive, handmade gifts including crafts, foods, jewelry and decorations. The event is free, except for costs of craft supplies people might use in creating their gifts. The festival will include assistance and demonstrations of various adult and childrens craft gifts, homemade and ethnic food gifts, and creation of holiday decorations. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Southeast 117th Avenue and Market Street. Searching for volunteers Over 600 volunteers are needed to help staff the 2004 Christmas Festival of Lights at The Grotto. The seventeenth annual celebration continues nightly through December 30. Individuals, families, neighborhood groups and community service organizations willing to volunteer for several evenings or as little as three hours one evening during the holidays are needed to carry out this elaborate presentation. Volunteers assist as greeters, hospitality hosts, ticket sellers, gift shop attendants, parking patrol, food booth helpers, petting zoo helpers, office assistants, St. Nicholas and the angel. All shifts are three hours with two shifts available each evening. The success of this celebration is heavily dependent on volunteer support. THINGS TO DO Outdoor Recreation Take advantage of the holiday break from school. Portland Parks & Recreation has arranged these packages for skiing, snowboarding and tubing enthusiasts. Downhill skiing and snowboarding for youth If you are a kid age 10 to 16, these trips have everything you need in one package: van transportation to the mountain, snowboard or ski equipment rental, a two-hour professional lesson and your lift ticket for the day. Summit Ski Area is the perfect place to learn and improve your skills. The fee schedule is as follows: $69 for skiing, $79 for snowboarding. There is a $20 discount if you have your own equipment. These are full day programs running from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The pickup and drop off site is the Hollywood West Fred Meyer store, 3030 N.E. Weidler St. Dates are Saturday, Dec. 11 and 18 and Sunday, Dec. 19. Snow Tubing for Youth If youve ever seen a kid zooming down a hill on an inner tube, you know they could happily do it all day long. The sliding hill at Summit Ski area on Mt. Hood is famous for its speed as well as its proximity to a warm lodge and bathrooms. Fee includes van transportation from the Hollywood West Fred Meyer, 3030 N.E. Weidler St. and chaperones. The fee is $29 plus $12 for tube rental. Both programs run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Choose Tuesday, Dec. 21 or 28, or go both days. Holiday wreath and swag making class On Saturday, Dec. 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Metro master gardeners will share the art of wreath and swag making at Blue Lake Regional Park. Each participant will take home a beautiful and unique craft. Cost is $10 per wreath, $5 per swag including evergreens, rings and wire. Bring decorations, glue guns, clippers and gloves if you have them. This is a great family holiday activity for ages 7 and above. Call 503-797-1928 to register. Blue Lake Regional Park is located between Marine Drive and Sandy Boulevard off Northeast 223rd Avenue. From Interstate 84, take the Fairview exit 14 and go north on 207th Avenue to Sandy Boulevard. Turn right onto Sandy Boulevard and travel east to 223rd Avenue and turn left. Proceed north to Blue Lake Road and the park. Activities at EPCC The calendar of the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave., is brimming with activities and classes for the whole family. A few of the December offerings follow. Explore the historic and ultimate challenge of this classic from basic skills and tactics to tournament play. Tournament is for novice players and is single-elimination. This is a non-sanctioned event. Wednesday, Dec. 29 from 1 to 6 p.m. $10 per person Parents Night Out For ages 5 to 10. Parents: Do you need a well-deserved break or time to get your holiday shopping done? Your child can spend time at EPCC. The staff there promises to keep them safe, busy and happily meeting new friends. Wednesday, Dec. 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. $15 fee. Messy Art - Winter Wonderland For ages 1 1/2 to 4 years. Silly snowmen, sparkly snowflakes and many other winter crafts are brought to life using mixed media. Enjoy, encourage and excite your child through art. Saturdays, Dec. 4 and 11 from 10 to 11 a.m. $14 fee. Cooking - Winter Cozy-Ups For ages 4 to 6 years. Its cold outside. Cook up yummy treats to warm up your tummy. Everything from hot chocolate to cobbler makes you snug as a bug in a rug. Tuesday, Dec. 7 and Thursday, Dec.16 from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. $20 fee. Winter Break Mix and Match Camps For ages 4 to 6 and 7 to 10. Put together the perfect schedule to match your needs. Specialized camps include sports, gymnastics, art, science and dance. Monday through Thursday, Dec. 20 to 23 and Dec. 27 to 30 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., 10:40 a.m. to 12:10 p.m., 1 to 2:30 p.m., and 2:40 to 4:10 p.m. $22 per session. Babysitting Skills American Red Cross For ages 11 to 15. Handle the challenge and responsibilities of baby-sitting including accident prevention, emergency situations, positive supervision, and first aid as well as babysitter rights. Saturday, Dec. 4 from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. $40 fee. Private Music Lessons For ages 7 to seniors. Piano, voice, guitar, drums, recorder, clarinet, flute and saxophone. Monday through Saturday.
