Federal budget bill gives TriMet new MAX trains Sen. Gordon Smith secures budget authority The federal budget bill passed by Congress recently includes a federal commitment of funds for seven additional MAX light rail cars. U.S. Senator Gordon Smith (R-Ore.) secured language in the bill that allows TriMet to use savings from the Interstate MAX project to pay for the additional cars, which will help alleviate crowding on the system and improve service. The total cost of the cars is $18 million. The strong leadership of Senator Smith made this happen, which keeps the federal government a partner in building our MAX system, and allows us to improve service, get people to jobs and to other activities throughout the region, said TriMet General Manager Fred Hansen. My thanks to Senator Smith for a terrific effort. Although the original Interstate MAX project anticipated 24 light rail vehicles, the signed contract with the Federal government cut this back to 17. The amendment by Senator Smith restores the original intent to allow 24 cars to be purchased and respond to record ridership levels and crowding on trains. The 5.8-mile Interstate MAX project opened four months ahead of schedule and millions under budget last May. TriMet expects the $18 million federal balance of the Interstate MAX line to be appropriated in fiscal year 2006. |
