Public comment solicited on proposed cargo feeder aircraft flight changes
The Port of Portland and city of Portland will jointly host two public meetings for residents to learn more about possible changes for small cargo feeder airplanes serving Portland International Airport (PDX). The proposed changes will attempt to better manage current neighborhood noise impacts from such flights.
A cargo feeder ad hoc committee is made up of neighborhood, business, and government representatives and met over the course of nine months to develop the recommended changes. Over two dozen committee members and engaged citizens represented surrounding neighborhoods, the cities of Portland and Vancouver, cargo feeder companies, the Federal Aviation Administration, the PDX Citizen Noise Advisory Committee and the Port.
The proposed recommendations focus on dispersing cargo feeder flights arriving at and departing from PDX to reduce the number of flights over any one neighborhood. The committee also recommended raising the altitude at which cargo feeders approach the airport to limit noise impacts over adjacent communities.
The FAA is currently reviewing the proposed recommendations to evaluate potential safety and capacity impacts. A formal 180-day test of these flight procedures by the FAA is targeted for late spring and early summer. Following this test period, the CNAC, which holds public meetings 10 times per year, will review test results with the public.
The Port and city will hold two public meetings to hear from the broader community before the FAA tests these recommendations. Public meetings will include a formal presentation and time for interested residents to talk one-on-one with committee members. The first meeting is set for Tuesday, April 25 at Madison High School, 2735 N.E. 82nd Ave. The second will be on Thursday, April 27 at Kenton Firehouse, 8105 N. Brandon St. Both are scheduled to run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Both locations are conveniently located near TriMet MAX light rail stations. For directions and instructions, please visit www.trimet.org or call 503-238-RIDE.
For more information about cargo feeder operations, visit www.flypdx.com and click on Noise Management, or call the Port Noise Management Office at 503-460-4100 or 800-938-6647.
The public meetings will focus on regional cargo feeder aircraft. For questions or concerns about jet air traffic, please call the Port Noise Complaint Hotline at 503-460-4100 or 800-938-6647. Noise management office staff responds to citizens' concerns, monitor aircraft noise, work with the public on noise issues and provide technical information regarding aircraft operations and noise levels.
