City launches business license verification Web site
On March 9, the city of Portland Revenue Bureau launched a new online service to verify city business licenses. The new service is designed to make it easy for citizens and businesses to confirm that the businesses they are patronizing are licensed by the city and in compliance with the Business Licenses section of the City Code (Title 7).
We are very excited to offer businesses and citizens this new tool, said Bureau Director Sue Klobertanz. Citizens can now access basic license information 24 hours per day and ensure that they are working with a business that is recognized as compliant by the city.
The Web site, www.portlandonline.com/licenses/lookup, also provides a form to report unlicensed businesses.
In an effort to increase business license compliance and ensure fair application of the City Code, the Revenue Bureau has also recently begun comparing State of Oregon tax filings to local business tax filings. In doing so, it is expected that some businesses will be located that are known to the state, but not the city.
The Revenue Bureau has also been working to implement comprehensive online e-commerce services as envisioned through the citys e-government efforts and by the city council when the bureau was created last year from consolidating other bureaus, a move resulting in ongoing annual savings of over $600,000.
We are very excited to roll out e-commerce tools for Portland businesses, Klobertanz said. Business owners will be able to file tax returns online, at their convenience, any time of the day or night. Online transactions are easy, accurate and efficient - and will reduce workload and error rates for businesses and the city.
New online filing options are expected to be available by March 27.
