SCHOOL CORNER
Big band concert and workshops offered at MHCC
Do you love the sound of big band music? Then Mt. Hood Community College has an evening of pure musical pleasure planned for you. No matter what your age, the Mike Vax Big Band will be a toe-tapping treat. If you’re a musician, members of the band will also be offering a free jazz workshop and master classes.

While Vax and many of his colleagues are alumni of the renowned Stan Kenton Orchestra, and several of the charts were taken from the Kenton book, the leader is quick to point out that they are not a “ghost band but a living, breathing entity.” They take pride in their new, original music while still staying in the “Kenton style.”

The free workshops will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 6 at MHCC, 26000 S.E. Stark St. Band members will conduct saxophone, trombone, trumpet, piano, bass guitar and drum workshops. To reserve a space, please contact Susie Jones at 504-491-7158.

To enjoy an evening of great music, attend the Mike Vax Big Band performance at 7:30 p.m. on April 6 in the MHCC Theater. A short set by the college vocal jazz ensemble, Genesis, will open the concert. All seats are $20. Make reservations by calling 503-491-7154.

People requiring accommodations due to a disability should contact the MHCC Disability Services Office at 503-491-6923 or 503-491-7670 (TDD).

Blumenauer announces high school art competition
Congressman Earl Blumenauer announced that he is accepting entries for the Annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students. This competition provides students a unique opportunity to showcase their artistic talent at the United States Capitol in Washington, DC. The winning student’s art will be displayed in the Capitol, and the student will be invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Congressional Art Competition was first launched in 1982. Since then, thousands of contests have been conducted throughout the country, involving more than 650,000 high school students. Each member of Congress sponsors a local art competition in his or her Congressional District and selects one winning entry. The winning piece of art from each district is displayed in the Capitol for one year.

The competition begins immediately. All entries must be submitted no later than Friday, April 7. Entrants must be high school students from the Third Congressional District of Oregon. Letters asking for artwork were sent to all high schools in the district earlier. To participate, each student must fill out an application and follow guidelines set by the U.S. House of Representatives. The winning student will receive an invitation to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new display in the U.S. Capitol Building on June 28 and three round-trip airline tickets to Washington, DC, courtesy of Southwest Airlines.

Eligible entries should be delivered to 729 N.E. Oregon St., Suite #115, Portland, OR 97232. For more information or to receive competition guidelines and an application, visit Blumenauer’s Web site at www.house.gov/blumenauer or contact Kathie Eastman in Blumenauer’s office at 503-231-2300.

Youth baseball registrations extended, coaches needed
Registration has been extended until April 15 for David Douglas School District students in kindergarten through age ten interested in playing baseball. The building coordinator at your child’s school has registration forms.

Open enrollment begins at St. Therese
Parents and grade-school-age students interested in learning more about St. Therese Catholic School are invited to contact the school during the open enrollment period that began April 1.

St. Therese provides an enriching and reasonably priced Catholic education for all families who value faith-based learning, according to Sister Kathy Cordes, principal.

The accredited curriculum for each grade includes religious training, computers, Spanish and music. Drama is open to all students, culminating with a spring musical production. Class size is limited to 30 students.

Students starting in first grade can participate in competitive sports sponsored by the Catholic Youth Organization.

“In this secure, spiritually-based environment, roadblocks to learning diminish,” said Jenny Wright, St. Therese school board president. “When your child attends school at St. Therese, your family joins a caring community of other families, which is another great benefit of our school.”

The Northwest Association of Accredited Schools and the Western Catholic Educational Association accredit the school.

St. Therese, located at 1260 N.E. 132nd Ave., is suburban east Multnomah County’s only Catholic grade school, serving 220 children from kindergarten through eighth grade.

If you would like to receive an application packet or to schedule a tour, you are invited to call Sister Kathy, at 503-253-9400.
