Drop off hazardous waste for free
Free household hazardous waste collection events take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every week (except Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends) between early March and mid-November in many communities across the Portland tri-county area. There are two scheduled in Mid-county this month. The first is at K-Mart, 12350 N.E. Sandy Blvd., on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6 and 7. The second will be at Rockwood United Methodist Church, 17805 S.E. Stark St., on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28.

Household hazardous waste is accepted year round at Metro's two permanent household hazardous waste facilities, Metro Central Station at 6161 N.W. 61st Ave. in Portland and Metro South Station at 2001 Washington St. in Oregon City. Last year, residents disposed of more than 640,000 pounds of hazardous waste at Metro's collection events. Be sure to prepare materials properly. No containers larger than five gallons and no loads more than 35 gallons.

There is no charge to bring your toxic trash to Metro's permanent facilities or community events. The true cost of processing an average load of household hazardous waste is approximately $85. A small portion of your monthly garbage bill goes to help pay for these services. Metro recycles most of what it collects and disposes of the rest in a landfill specifically designed for hazardous waste. Metro recycles latex paint and sells it in one-gallon cans and five-gallon pails. For more information, call Metro Recycling Information at 503-234-3000 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The hearing impaired can call TDD 503-797-1804.

Participate in tour, learn about garden
Leach Botanical Garden, 6704 S.E. 122nd Ave., features a monthly theme for its Saturday morning public tours. The first Saturday of each month will continue to be the Gardener's Tour, led by Leach Botanical Garden's Garden Steward Scotty Fairchild. Garden volunteers will lead all other Saturday tours at 10 a.m.

In October discover the rainbow of fall colors that make autumn one of Leach Botanical Garden's showiest seasons. In November learn about the value of tall trees and conifers in the garden

While admission is free, your donation of $5 will be accepted. To learn more, contact Nancy Williams at 503-823-1671.

Celebrate the return of salmon
The annual Salmon Festival at Oxbow Regional Park celebrates the return of the fall Chinook salmon to the Sandy River and inspires us to value clean water and healthy watersheds. The festival offers interactive exhibits, nature walks, engaging activities for children, arts and crafts demonstrations, music and storytelling, horse-drawn wagon rides, a salmon barbecue and food court, and the Wy-Kan-Ush-Pum Village hosted by the fishing tribes of the Columbia River Basin. Don't be afraid of those clouds -- the festival is "weatherized" with entertainment, exhibits, children's activities and food areas under cover.

The festival is Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Oxbow Regional Park is located within the Sandy River Gorge, 8 miles east of Gresham. From I-84, take the Troutdale exit 17. Go past the truck stop to the light. Turn right on 257th Avenue, go three miles to Division Street. Turn left onto Division Street. Follow the signs 6.5 miles and turn left. Follow the road to the park.

The cost is $8 per vehicle or $12 per bus. For more information, call 503-797-1850 or visit www.metro-region.org/salmonfestival.

Protect your estate, plan for the future
Attend a free estate planning family workshop on Monday, Oct. 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Montavilla Community Center, 8219 N.E. Glisan St.

Estate planners claim that 80% of families are caught unprepared, unaware that they even have an estate. If you own real or personal property, you do, in fact have an estate and should make plans for the future.

This educational and comprehensive workshop presented by estate planning attorneys will explain available options and give you access to important information about wills and probate, living trusts, health directives, powers of attorney and guardian issues.

To find out more, contact the community center at 503-823-4101 or Devra Augusson at 503-241-1215.
