Guided walks for seniors
Fran and Luella Landfair are enjoying their second year of Senior Strolls, fun and informational neighborhood walks, sponsored by the Transportation Options division of the City of Portland’s Office of Transportation. This active couple has been leading along with Elders in Action and PDOT for the past two years, focusing on senior pedestrian issues. After the Portland City Council accepted the Elders in Action Walkable Neighborhoods for Seniors report in March 2004, PDOT has taken great strides in creating safe routes for seniors around city senior centers and a walking challenge to encourage healthy walking activity for the thousands of Portland seniors.

Elders in Action is pleased to continue to partner with PDOT on various pedestrian safety initiatives. Fran and Luella hope other seniors will join in the Transportation Options specially designed Senior Strolls in Northeast Portland. These one-mile guided walks in historic Portland neighborhoods offer seniors an easy, pleasant, social walking experience and provide confidence to consider walking as a transportation option. The health benefits of walking are numerous, including reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.

Senior Strolls are set for Wednesdays at 10 a.m. through Oct. 18. For convenience, all strolls begin and end along TriMet routes. Put on your walking shoes and get ready for Senior Strolls in Historic Irvington with a special visit to Irvington school, a classic home, a behind-the-scenes look at the beautiful Hollywood Theater, and other lovely sites. Contact Donna Green at 503-823-6114 or visit the Transportation Options Web site at http://www.portlandonline.com/transportation/index.cfm?c=41541 to find details about the other strolls.

Elders in Action believes the quality of life should never depend on age. Fran and Luella have made walking a daily part of their routine and hope you join in the fun and walk your way to good health with these Senior Strolls.
