Memo Calendar (cont'd) ... MEETINGS City will offer land use training A free workshop on the ABCs of Land Use will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7. Participants will learn about the city of Portlands planning and land use review processes so they may be better informed advocates for their neighborhoods and communities. The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Historic Kenton Firehouse, 2209 N. Schofield at Brandon. The City of Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement, North Portland Neighborhood Services, Bureau of Planning, and Bureau of Development Services sponsor this event. The workshop is free and open to the public, but you must register in advance. Space is limited to the first 30 who register. The workshop will explain what a land use review is, describe the difference between various review procedures, and explain how to read and respond to a Land Use Review Notice. Participants will take part in a hands-on exercise applying approval criteria and responding to typical land use case scenarios. You will meet fellow land use activists involved with similar issues and hear Marguerite Feuersanger from the Bureau of Planning. Multi-family dwellings will be discussion topic The Bureau of Development Services monthly community education Brown Bag Lunch and Learn session for October will define the differences between townhouses, row houses and duplexes. Attendees will learn about planning and processing for these multi-family projects, hear about the role the Land Division plays in the process, and have time for questions with BDS staff. The meeting is downtown at 1900 S.W. 4th Ave. in Conference Room 2500 A on Friday, Oct. 13 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Garden club seeks new members The Flower Lane Garden Club has a special event planned this month. Members and folks interested in becoming members are invited to a guided tour of the gardens at McMenamins Edgefield, 2126 S.W. Halsey St. in Troutdale, on Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be ordered from the menu at one of the restaurants on the grounds. Public committee meeting scheduled The East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, which includes all of Multnomah County east of the Willamette River, will hold its regular monthly board meeting on Monday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. in Room 443 of Montgomery Park, 2701 N.W. Vaughn St. The agenda will include discussion of possible office relocation partners and revised personnel policies as well as other items of business. The East Multnomah SWCD Strategic Planning Workshop Steering Committee meeting is open to the public and set for Monday, Oct. 23 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Alder Room at the Ecotrust Building at 721 N.W. 9th Ave., Suite 200, in downtown Portland. CHURCHES Celebrate German heritage Rivercrest Community Church, 3201 N.E. 148th Ave., has been hosting a traditional German sausage dinner for more than 20 years. Join the fun on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. for music and a dinner that includes German sausage, sauerkraut, German potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, homemade bread and apple crisp. For more information call 503-254-4400. Tickets can be purchased at the door: $9 for adults, $5 for children age 4 to 12. Harvest Festival upcoming Gateway Baptist Church, 13300 N.E. San Rafael St., will host its annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. There will be food and games for all ages. Game and food tickets will be offered for a small fee. FUNDRAISERS Run to support Friends of Trees Friends of Trees will host its first Fun Run for Restoration, a 5-mile run/3.5-mile walk, on Sunday, Oct. 8, beginning at Oaks Amusement Park, 7100 Oaks Park Way. Registration is at 8:30 a.m., the run starts at 9 a.m., and the walk starts at 9:30 a.m. The Nike Factory Store sponsors the Fun Run for Restoration. Friends of Trees has provided a user-friendly online registration form at www.friendsoftrees.org. The cost for those who sign up by Oct. 2 is $25 for each adult, $18 for youth ages 7 to 14, $50 per family, and free for kids under 7. Registration fees go up $5 after Oct. 2. The first 500 to register will receive free Fun Run T-shirts. All participants will receive a Nike gym bag. Fun Run participants are encouraged to bring their old athletic shoes for Nikes Reuse-A-Shoe program. Nike will contribute $2 per pair to Friends of Trees. Nike uses old athletic shoes to create surfaces for basketball and tennis courts, athletic fields and running tracks. Funds raised from the Fun Run will support Friends of Trees Neighborhood Trees and Natural Area Restoration planting programs. To view maps of the run and walk, visit www.friendsoftrees.org.
