Memo Pad...

To fully serve the community, the Mid-county Memo offers this section to showcase upcoming special events, celebrations of milestones in our readers’ lives, those seemingly small accomplishments that often do not receive the recognition they deserve, and everyday events that should be shared with friends and neighbors.

Memo Pad submissions for the November issue are due by Monday, Oct. 16. For best results, e-mail Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Or mail editorial submissions to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave, Portland, OR 97230. To leave a phone message, call 503-287-8904. The fax number is 503-249-7672.

Parent volunteers wanted
Parents and supporters of the Parkrose High Class of 2007 are asked to lend a hand this fall at the Rossi Farms Haunted House fundraising event. There is a planning session on Monday, Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the library at the high school, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. If you miss that, call Janet Gardner at 503-254-5127 to volunteer.

The Haunted House is open the last couple of weekends of the month leading up to Halloween. All funds raised will help pay for the Class of 2007 Senior All Night Party next spring.

Seniors will enjoy gourmet pizza
Pizzicato, a gourmet pizza company based in Portland, will provide meals for all seniors served by Loaves & Fishes Centers on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Loaves & Fishes Centers serves 4,300 seniors each weekday in Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties. About 1,500 meals are served at 28 different meal sites, and volunteers through the Meals-On-Wheels Program deliver the rest to homebound seniors. Pizzicato is the first restaurant in the metro area to provide such a gift. The retail value of this donation is $6,000.

Pizzicato staff will prepare vegetarian lasagna and hand-tossed pizza with sweet Italian sausage and roasted vegetables, along with a mixed green salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing, in the Loaves & Fishes Centers Central Kitchen on Tuesday, Oct. 24, beginning at 7 a.m. The food will be baked on location at the Loaves & Fishes Centers the following day and served hot to seniors. Loaves & Fishes Centers will supplement the meal with a three-bean salad, a whole wheat roll and tangerines. This complete menu represents one-third of the RDA for seniors recommended by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Russellville Kiwanis supports parenting program
The Russellville Kiwanis Club recently approved the purchase of the Make Parenting a Pleasure curriculum for Molly Dwyer’s Parkrose High School class as part of the Kiwanis Young Children, Priority One theme.

Dwyer is the coordinator of services for teen parents at Parkrose. The aim of the teen parent program is to give PHS teen parents the tools and skills to raise children that enjoy school success, are engaged in their communities, and who will in turn become nurturing and involved parents, breaking the cycle of inattentive or disinterested parenting as well as the cycle of poverty and dependence.

Molly stated, “Being a young parent is stressful for anyone. It is even more so for teen parents, many who also experience the stress of poverty, abuse and neglect. The children of teen parents are at risk of suffering from abuse and neglect themselves. They are also more likely to live in poverty and become teen parents. We want to not only prevent abuse and neglect, but also to break those cycles, enabling teen parents and their children to succeed, to develop healthy, nurturing relationships, and to become financially independent.”

The members of the Russellville Kiwanis Club strive, as do other Kiwanians around the world, to help in many ways to see that children are our first priority. The club is pleased to provide this curriculum to help these teen parents as another extension of the club’s community service, which includes support of SnowCap, Daybreak Family Shelter, Ronald McDonald House and the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp for disabled children and youth.

If you are interested in being a part of Kiwanis, you are invited for lunch any Wednesday from noon to 1:15 p.m. at Russellville Park, Southeast 103rd Avenue and Burnside Street. If you have any questions, please contact Charlie Ross at 503-252-1570.
