LIBRARIES
Award-winning author will visit book groups
Author Jim Lynch will discuss his debut novel, "The Highest Tide," at these local libraries. These visits will be in conjunction with Pageturners book groups meeting at Gregory Heights Library, 7921 N.E. Sandy Blvd., on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m., and at Midland Library, 805 S.E. 122nd Ave., on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 6:45 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m.

Winner of the 2006 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Book Award, "The Highest Tide" tells the coming-of-age story of 13-year-old Miles O'Malley, who goes out on a routine hunt for starfish, snails and clams one summer and instead finds a giant squid, becoming a local sensation. Lynch is a resident of Olympia, Wash.

For more information about Lynch's appearances, visit www.multcolib.org/events/lynch.html.

A generous grant from Friends of the Multnomah County Library has allowed Multnomah County Library to continue its popular book groups for adults. Pageturners meet on a monthly basis in our neighborhood libraries, and each library provides participants with copies of the featured books. Titles scheduled for discussion this year include "Delta Wedding" by Eudora Welty, "The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History" by John M. Barry, "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach, and "The Tortilla Curtain" by T. Coraghessan Boyle.

In February 2007, all of the Pageturners book groups will participate in Everybody Reads, Multnomah County Library's annual community-wide book discussion. The selection is "Midnight at the Dragon Café" by Judy Fong Bates. For more information about related programs and events, visit www.multcolib.org/reads.

A complete list of book discussion dates, locations and titles can be found at www.multcolib.org/books/groups.
