Off-leash review and comment
One in three Portland households own at least one dog. That makes for a lot of dogs in our fair city. Those dogs and their two-legged friends would like a place to legally romp off-leash. A year ago, Portland Parks & Recreation initiated a dog off-leash program, designed to provide just that. The program’s goal was to offer dog owners a range of on-leash and off-leash opportunities that also respected the basic needs of other park users. An Off-Leash Advisory Committee has spent the past year working with PP&R to evaluate the current program and recommend ways in which it can be improved. Their draft recommendations for Southeast and outer east neighborhoods will be presented for review and comment at a public meeting on Saturday, Nov. 20 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Mt. Scott Community Center Auditorium, 5530 S.E. 72nd Ave.

The meeting will begin with a presentation on the overall program and recommendations. Then participants will have the opportunity to visit stations displaying detailed information about the parks of greatest interest to them. Two sites under consideration in Mid-county are East Holladay Park on Northeast 128th Avenue and Holladay Street and Argay Park on Northeast 141st Avenue and Failing Street.

To learn more, call PP&R at 503-823-7529 or visit the Web site at www.portlandparks.org.

Festival of lights
Continuing the annual tradition, The Grotto will welcome visitors to its highly praised Christmas Festival of Lights beginning Friday, Nov. 26. The gates open nightly from 5 to 9:30 p.m. through Thursday, Dec. 30 with the exception of Christmas Day.

Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 3 to 12. Children age 2 and under are admitted free. Visitors are asked to bring a donation of canned or dry baby food to benefit SnowCap, the emergency food ministry serving Mid-county.

The Grotto is located at Northeast 85th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard. Tickets can be purchased at The Grotto Gift Shop, at all TicketMaster outlets and at the gate. For more information, call 503-261-2400.

Dance reunion
Judy Marsh School of Dance has been offering dance classes at 11931 N.E. Halsey St. for 30 years. In celebration of that anniversary, Judy plans a production number starring former students at her school’s annual spring recital.

Rehearsals will begin this winter. To be a part of this nostalgic event, call Judy Marsh between 3:30 and 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday at 503-253-8002.

For women only
Slim and Tone 30-Minute Workout for Women, 11404 N.E. Halsey St., is offering free chair massages on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. during November. Call 503-492-9270 to schedule an appointment. Table massages are also available.

On Saturday, Nov. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., drop in at Slim and Tone for a free class to learn about estrogen overload. Open to women of all ages, “this can be a good class for mothers and daughters to attend together,” says the announcement from our business neighbors at Slim and Tone.

And as we like to say, tell them the MEMO sent you.

Changes afoot
Perhaps now more than ever, your neighborhood association needs you. In recent weeks, Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors, the Russell Neighborhood Association and Hazelwood Neighborhood Association have lost valued and active members.

Ann Croze, long time recording secretary, Lou Evans and Velma Berry, both board members, and Ruby Osborne have all resigned their positions with PHAN, some for personal reasons, some for health issues. Elsie Lasher and Donna Abelein have stepped down as secretary and treasurer respectively of RNA as they have moved from the neighborhood. As reported in the October issue of the Mid-county MEMO, Sharon Owen has moved out of Hazelwood and resigned as vice president of that group.

Get in touch the East Portland Neighborhood Office, located at 735 S.E. 106th Ave., to identify your local neighborhood association and learn how you can become involved. EPNO office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Contact the office by phone at 503-823-4550, by fax at 503-823-4525 or by e-mail at epno@epno.org
