Hood Community College Maywood Park campus features a Community Skills Center that offers a host of opportunities designed to help area residents achieve their goals. Prescott St., will offer a class for individuals thinking about buying their first computer. David Douglas parents The All-Night Party Committee for the David Douglas class of 2005 is hard at work raising money to fund the event for this years graduates. They are taking orders for holiday poinsettias through Wednesday, Nov.17. Orders are to be picked up on Wednesday Dec. 3 at the South (VFA) cafeteria on Southeast 130th Avenue and Market Street. The committee is also offering Scot window clings for your car. You can buy them at football games and other activities on campus. Those organizing this traditional event can use your help. This free 7 p.m. performance will be held at the high school, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. The evenings program features the PHS Treble Choir, A Cappella Choir and the high energy Debonaires. Tour the past The David Douglas Historical Society extends a special invitation to all Mid-County neighbors to visit, tour and attend events held at the school districts history museum. Open house and tours are offered on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon. See the one-room schoolhouse, old photos, and documents showing the people and events that shaped the David Douglas School District. All are welcome to attend meetings on the third Tuesday of the month at 1:30 pm. Hear special speakers present a variety of interesting topics. Market St., will offer a seminar focusing on aging adults and those who care for them. An expert panel will cover such issues as legal concerns, getting personal affairs in order, home health and personal care, living options, in-home help and end of life care. FUNDRAISERS A century of music Rivercrest Community Church, 3201 N.E. 148th Ave., will host a scholarship benefit concert by the Monday Musical Club of Portland, on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. The club, which fosters and encourages the understanding and development of music, is celebrating its 100th anniversary and will use proceeds from this event for its scholarship fund. THINGS TO DO Birds and things The weather is changing creating an abundance of opportunities to learn about and enjoy nature in and around the Portland area. Metro sponsors the following events. Autumn birds at Smith and Bybee Lakes Saturday, Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. By November, wintering waterfowl and raptors, as well as resident birds, will be at Smith and Bybee Lakes Wildlife Area. As the leaves fall from the trees, it is easier to see the songbirds. Bring binoculars or borrow a pair from Metro. Advance registration is required; call 503-797-1850 option 4. Smith and Bybee Lakes Wildlife Area, 4949 N. Marine Drive, can be reached by taking Interstate 5 to Marine Drive west exit 307. Go west on North Marine Drive for 2.2 miles. Turn left at the large brown and white wildlife area sign. Meet Metro naturalist James Davis in the wildlife area parking lot. Stewardship day at Smith and Bybee Lakes Wildlife Area Sunday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Help restore this 2,000-acre North Portland wetland by weeding around native plantings, removing invasive species, collecting native plant seeds and picking up trash. Birds of prey class Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. Hawks, eagles, falcons and owls have always fascinated people.
