Cherrywood Village to get contested sky bridge

LEE PERLMAN
THE MID-COUNTY MEMO

It appears that the Cherrywood Village senior complex will be allowed to build a sky bridge connecting two buildings at Southeast 107th Avenue and Clay Street, despite the opposition of planners and the Portland Design Commission.

Cherrywood Village applied for the bridge last year. It was necessary, they argued, to provide a comfortable and safe way for their residents to move from one building to another. The commission didn’t agree, citing city policy opposing such facilities as akin to a gated community and contrary to the goal of promoting pedestrian activity on city streets.

Cherrywood Village appealed the issue to Portland City Council, which granted them an encroachment into the public right of way, and sent the matter back to the commission to work on details. After a hearing last month, the commission set the matter over to Nov. 18, when it is expected to be approved.
