SCHOOL CORNER Fall adult English classes begin The Portland State University Leaders Roundtable sponsors adult English as a second language classes at various locations throughout the city. One such location is Parkrose High School at 12003 N.E. Shaver St. Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in rooms A 5/6 and A 7/8 beginning Tuesday, Oct. 4 through Tuesday Nov. 22. You need not preregister. There is a one-time $5 fee, however, no one will be turned away. Childcare is provided. Community classes at Alice Ott set Alice Ott SUN/Community School, located at 12500 S.E. Ramona St., in the David Douglas School District, will offer evening classes for youth and adults this winter. Portland Parks and Recreation, Multnomah County and the David Douglas School District sponsor these classes that are open to everyone, so try something new this fall. Yoga for beginning and continuing students will be offered on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:15 p.m. beginning on Oct. 11. Cost is $38. Conversational Spanish for beginning and continuing students is on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Oct. 4. Cost is $40. Learn the swing, salsa, waltz, cha-cha and fox trot in the Ballroom Dance class on Tuesdays from 8 to 9 p.m. that begins on Oct. 4. Cost is $32. Learn meditation techniques on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. beginning Oct. 18. Cost is $20. Stamping and Card Making will teach you to emboss, sponge and stencil on Thursdays from 6 t0 8 p.m. on Oct. 6, 13 and 20 for $12. There will be an additional fee of $2.50 for supplies. A free Home Weatherization class will be offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8. MEETINGS Citizens Advisory Committee meeting date set Adding a TriMet MAX light rail line adjacent to I-205 and connecting to the downtown Portland Mall is part of the 6.5-mile I-205 Portland Mall Light Rail Project scheduled to open in September 2009. As part of this effort, you are invited to attend the Interstate 205 Citizens Advisory Committee meeting which will convene on Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Portland Youth Builders, 4816 S.E. 92nd Ave. Agenda items for the meeting include a recap of preliminary engineering and key decisions, environment study and mitigation and final design work. The project is currently awaiting Federal Transit Administration approval to enter final design. Chamber meets every Wednesday morning Small businesses are a fundamental building block of communities. Operating and growing a small business is one of the toughest, yet most exhilarating challenges on earth. Join the East Portland Chamber of Commerce for a regular slate of morning meetings. Each Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. meetings are hosted by member businesses, these meetings provide valuable information to small business owners and serve as a great setting for networking. Neighborhood associations set monthly meeting dates Organizing annual neighborhood debris collection sites, tree planting weekends, and community wide garage sales are but a few of the ways our local neighborhood associations work to keep our communities livable. If you are not sure which neighborhood association represents you, contact the East Portland Neighborhood Office, located at 735 S.E. 106th Ave. EPNO office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Leaders of the Wilkes Community Group would like to engage more citizen participation in neighborhood and citywide issues.
