OCOM receives grant
The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine has been awarded a $700,000 research grant by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health. The four-year grant for research education enhancement is designed to improve research literacy and research participation skills of acupuncture practitioners by developing and implementing a tiered educational curriculum.

“We are delighted to have been selected by NCCAM/NIH to receive this grant,” said Michael Gaeta, OCOM president. “With this federal support, the college will be able to develop methodologies to enhance research evaluation and research design competencies of our master’s and doctoral students, as well as OCOM’s faculty.”

OCOM’s Research Director Richard Hammerschlag will act as the principal investigator for the grant that began in September and spans four years. Year one is the planning stage, and years two through four make up the implementation stage. “Our major goal is to train acupuncturists to participate in designing research projects so that clinical trials will reflect the everyday practice of acupuncture as well as meet the rigorous standards of scientific research”, said Hammerschlag.

A culmination conference, to share the grant-developed educational programs with the 50 other acupuncture colleges nationwide, is planned for the end of year four. “As the first acupuncture college in the nation to receive an NCCAM/NIH research education grant, OCOM would like to extend the opportunity for others in the field to share in our results,” said Hammerschlag.

The grant builds upon a foundation of research collaboration with the Oregon Health & Science University on NCCAM/NIH funded projects that began more than five years ago. Faculty researchers from the OHSU Schools of Medicine and Nursing will have active roles in grant-related training of OCOM students and faculty.

The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, 10541 S.E. Cherry Blossom Drive, near Mall 205, offers a four-year, nationally accredited master’s degree program and a two-year, clinical doctoral degree program in acupuncture and Oriental medicine. The college operates a teaching clinic, the OCOM Acupuncture & Herbal Clinic, which encompasses a Faculty Practice, an Intern Clinic, a Massage Clinic, and Herbal Clinic.
