SCHOOL CORNER
Kindergarten registration for fall
Kindergarten Round-Up for Margaret Scott Elementary School in the Reynolds School District will be on Wednesday, May 16 from 5 to 6 p.m. This will be a time to meet the teachers and visit the classrooms. Registration forms for incoming kindergarten students will be accepted at this time.

Registration forms are available between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday-Friday at the school office, 14700 N.E. Sacramento St. The phone number is 503-255-2031.

There will also be a special welcoming event Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. to provide a more in-depth introduction to the school and the kindergarten program. Registrants will be contacted regarding fall schedules.

Students to exhibit photos
The community is invited to attend a special showing of photographs taken by students who participated in a five-week series of after-school workshops at Parkrose High School. Working with PHS parents and professional photographers Jefferey L. Simon and Patrick F. Smith, students learned both digital and traditional camera techniques. A highlight of the series was a field trip to Newspace Center for Photography, a nonprofit gallery in downtown Portland.

The Thursday, May 17 reception at the high school, 12003 N.E. Shaver St., will include refreshments and welcoming remarks from the students about their artwork. It begins at 5 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m.

The photography workshops were made possible through a small grant from the East Portland Neighborhood Office, and with support from the SUN and Community Connections programs at Parkrose. MHCC has special deal on computer classes
Don’t miss out on the Mt. Hood Community College Community Skills Center two-for-one spring term deal. From now until June 1, you can register for a Community Skills Center non-credit computer class and either take another class for free or sign up a friend for free. Classes range from beginning to advanced levels and are designed to improve your computer skills either at home or for the job. Classes are self-paced with open registration. The lab is open seven days a week, and an instructor is available on site to help guide you through your work. Take up to 10 weeks to complete your courses. Competitive Edge Business Training series continues
The popular series of $29 seminars at Mt. Hood Community College designed to support employees and managers from organizations of all sizes and types will continue with a new topic each month throughout the spring and summer. All classes are held on the Gresham Mt. Hood Community College campus, 26000 S.E. Stark St. from 1 to 4 p.m. Parking is free, beverages will be served, and the workshop-style classes promise to give participants tools to increase their potential to be successful both in the workplace and outside of it.

The May offering will address handling difficult people while the June class will discuss workplace success.

Register now for fall preschool
Gethsemane Lutheran Preschool, 11560 S.E. Market St., is accepting registration for the 2007-08 school year. Children need to be 3 or 4 years of age by Sept. 1, 2007, and toilet trained to enroll. Preschool operates from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Three-year-olds attend two days a week-Tuesday and Thursday. Four-year-olds may attend Monday, Wednesday and Friday or all weekdays. A special Lunch Bunch program offers extended hours from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday-Thursday only.

Celebrate healthy aging
CherryWood Village Retirement Community, 1417 S.E. 107th Ave., is hosting its sixth annual Healthy Aging Fair. This free event is from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 23 and is open to the public.

Enjoy a cooking demonstration and sample a healthy breakfast prepared by Sodexo Dining Services at 9:30 a.m. Hear Thelma Lofquist, PhD., discuss creative aging at 11 a.m. and physiologist Sherrie Evanson talk about exercise at 1 p.m. The CherryWood Village Choir, comprised of CWV residents, will perform at 3 p.m.

Throughout the day take part in free balance screenings by Generations Therapy Clinic and a free gym orientation by the CWV wellness staff, visit with local health and wellness vendors and sign up for raffle drawings.

Salute the nation’s veterans
Join the residents and staff of Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes on Friday, May 25 for a special Memorial Day observance and open house. The Oregon Army National Guard and the Portland Police Highland Guard Bagpipe Band will offer a short program during an 11 a.m. flag-raising ceremony.

From noon to 2 p.m., enjoy a complimentary soup and salad bar luncheon, tour the campus and participate in prize drawings.

MEETINGS
Annual audit on agenda at EMSWCD meeting
The East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, which includes all of Multnomah County east of the Willamette River, will hold its regular monthly board of directors meeting on Monday, May 7 at 6 p.m. in Room 443 of Montgomery Park, 2701 N.W. Vaughn St. The agenda will include an explanation of the annual audit by the district’s auditors and other items of business. The public is welcome at this meeting. Learn about seismic regulations
There are regulations in place that determine seismic upgrade requirements for existing buildings. The Bureau of Development Services monthly Lunch and Learn Brown Bag series on Friday, May 11 will address these regulations.

Learn about seismic upgrades, which buildings may require upgrades, and what circumstances trigger upgrades. Examples of voluntary upgrades will be shown as well.

Pack a lunch and head downtown to 1900 S.W. 4th Ave. for the meeting with city staff from noon to 1 p.m.

Flower show announced
The Flower Lane Garden Club is inviting the community to its flower show at Portland Eastside Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15. PBA meeting set
Multnomah County Commissioner Ted Wheeler is the scheduled guest speaker at the monthly general membership meeting of the Parkrose Business Association. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at Steamers Restaurant, 8303 N.E. Sandy Blvd., on Thursday, May 17. Jon Turino of Farmers Insurance will speak during the traditional Member Moment.

Cold case detective to speak
There will be a meeting of the East Precinct Block Captain Program on Wednesday, May 23 in the East Precinct Community Room, located at 737 S.E. 106th Ave. The meeting will go from 6 to 8 p.m.

The keynote speaker will be Detective Paul Weatheroy of the Portland Police Bureau’s Cold Case Squad. Weatheroy will explain how the Cold Case Squad solves crimes that have been on the books long enough to seem unsolvable.

All members of the community who are concerned about neighborhood livability and crime reduction are encouraged to attend.

Summer season begins with Mother’s Day Mass and honoring mothers
Beginning Mother’s Day and continuing through September, The Grotto will offer an outdoor celebration of Sunday Mass. This year the special Mother’s Day Mass honoring all mothers will be celebrated at noon on Sunday, May 13 outdoors in the central plaza. If the weather turns bad, Mass will be celebrated in the Chapel of Mary.

Ileen Barlow, Oregon’s 2007 Mother of the Year, and Michelle Tullis, Oregon’s 2007 Young Mother of the Year, will be honored at the end of the Mass. Many former mothers of the year will be honored guests at this event as well.

Mother’s Day is fast approaching. Parkrose Community United Church of Christ is offering hanging floral baskets to fill your gift-giving needs. Rummage sale and tasty treats at local church
Our Savior Lutheran Church and Community School will offer its annual rummage sale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 3-5. Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. all three days.

Expect to find great items in good condition including tools, CDs, movies, camping gear, household items, clothing, crafts and more. A cafe will serve donuts, fresh-baked cookies, hotdogs, chips and more at reasonable prices.

The Parkrose High Bronco Boosters continues its fund-raising efforts with its monthly returnable bottle and can drive. Volunteers will be at Parkrose Middle School, 11800 N.E. Shaver St. on Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to accept your donations.

Community programs to benefit from sale
The Parkrose Community United Church of Christ, 4715 N.E. 106th Ave., will host a gently used sale on Friday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Proceeds from the sale will benefit community programs for youth, seniors and low-income residents.

Celebration in support of Asian Heritage Month at Legin Restaurant
The month of May is Asian Heritage Month. To recognize that and raise the visibility of Portland’s Asian community, the Asian Family Center, a program of the Immigration and Refugee Community Organization will hold its 12th annual Asian Cultural Night on Friday, May 11 from 6 p.m. to midnight at Legin Restaurant, 8001 S.E. Division St.

The event features a five-course family-style Chinese dinner; Sho Dozono, CEO of Azumano Travel, as keynote speaker; a raffle; a fashion show plus lively entertainment including performances from several cultures and open-floor dancing to a live band.

Tickets are $25 each. Proceeds support the Asian Family Center’s youth programs which include SUN School programs in three schools, youth gang prevention and intervention services, homework clubs, tutoring and academic support plus early childhood and anti-poverty services.
