Memo Letters...
To the Editor: I would like to bring to your readers attention an incident that occurred Friday, April 6 in the early afternoon in the Refectory Restaurant banquet room. The Multnomah District Garden Club, a regular client, was having its semi-annual luncheon when a member started choking on a piece of chicken. Luckily a long-time employee and a key part of our banquet staff, Hector Rivera, was clearing plates at the table. Seeing what was happening, he immediately set down the dishes and performed the Heimlich Maneuver, dislodging the aforementioned morsel and easing the discomfort of the guest. Another member, whom I later learned was a trained nurse, made it a point to bring all that happened to my attention. It was immediately apparent that Rivera should be recognized for his prompt, calm handling of the situation. Rivera was so calm, in fact, that many at the luncheon were unaware of the episode. While I have made it a point to make the staff, owners and customers aware of Riveras actions, I feel that he deserves much more. So here I publicly salute and thank Hector for his immediate, clear-headed action. Thank you for allowing me to give praise and acknowledgement to one who deserves much more. Sincerely, Pat Williams, banquet manager Refectory Restaurant |
