Mid-county Memo Executive Editor Rich Riegel was honored March 15 with the first Citizen of the Year Award from the Gateway Elks Lodge No. 2411. The Gateway Elks Lodge is located at 711 N.E. 100th Ave. in Portland.

Riegel was feted during an evening ceremony at the lodge, along with dozens of Gateway Elks volunteer committee members.

The Citizen of the Year Award is a national Grand Lodge Program that encourages each lodge to select a citizen, not necessarily an Elk, who has contributed in a special way to improving the community. It recognizes someone who has shown leadership in the community, has contributed voluntary service and is recognized as being an all-around good citizen.

Riegel was managing editor of the Mid-county Memo neighborhood newspaper from 1990 to 1999, when he became the Memo’s executive editor to consult regularly on content while co-editing the Daily Journal of Commerce.

Riegel returned to the Memo in 2004 to become a member of its sales team and take up writing feature stories for the Memo again. He’s worked on daily, weekly and monthly newspapers throughout the Portland and Vancouver area, as a reporter, editor and photographer.

Riegel, along with Memo Publisher Tim Curran, was recognized two years ago by the Parkrose School District for the newspaper’s support of the district’s mission.
