Memo Calendar...

The Mid-county Memo is a newspaper dedicated to serving the community. One of the best ways to do this is by informing Memo readers of upcoming events of interest and meetings of groups they might like to join. Help connect our community! If you are part of a group that you enjoy, let your neighbors know about it. Publicize your special event or fundraiser here in the Mid-county Memo Calendar section.

Submissions for each month are due by the 15th of the previous month. Please have Calendar submissions for April in by Monday, March 17. We prefer e-mailed submissions sent to Dawn Widler, Department Editor at editor@midcountymemo.com. You may also mail complete information to 4052 N.E. 22nd Ave., Portland, OR, 97212-1503, phone 503-287-8904 or fax 503-249-7672.

Learn to bridge the Mars-to-Venus gap
Every year in the United States, thousands of marriages end in divorce. Research shows that one of the leading reasons for divorce is poor communication skills. The Northeast Catholic Counseling Center is offering an investment opportunity for couples who want to make their marriage last.

Are you tired of the same tensions and disagreements? Are there issues that you would like to resolve once and for all? Invest in new communication skills that will work for you and your relationship to resolve these ongoing problems.

The Northeast Catholic Counseling Center offers Couple Communication Skills, a communication program that will teach you how to stop the blame game, put a stop to defensiveness, and change a break down in communication into a resolved conflict. The Couple Communication Skills program is a high-powered tool for understanding and resolving issues in daily life as well as during stressful events. Participate in this educational series that teaches couples how to listen to one another, clarify communication and most importantly, resolve conflict.

Committed couples seeking to improve communication skills will benefit from this class. Classes begin Tuesday, March 4, and are held for five consecutive Tuesday evenings from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. Pre-registration is required. The course will be repeated again in April and held five consecutive Wednesday evenings.

For more information and to register, call Lisa Sheridan at the Northeast Catholic Counseling Center at 503-253-0964.

Pray - in silence
A new type of prayer is being offered on Sunday, March 16 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Mary at The Grotto, Taizé Prayer is an ecumenical meditative service, where one invites God’s presence to penetrate one’s innermost being. This form of prayer comes from the Christian monastic community of Taizé, located in the heart of the Burgundy region in France.

“Nothing is more conducive to communion with the Living God than a meditative common prayer with singing that never ends, but continues in the silence of one’s heart, when one is alone again,” said Brother Roger Schutz, Founder of Taizé. For further information, please contact The Grotto at 503-254-7371.

A new speaker series
Firwood Gardens Residential Care is proud to announce that they will start holding a monthly Speakers Forum. Speakers Forum will invite noted individuals to make a presentation in their specific field. Firwood Gardens is a senior housing community, so each presentation will incorporate a senior focus and general interest.

Along with residents and their families, the local business community is invited to participate. The next Speakers Forum will be held on Thursday, March 27 at 7 p.m. Portland City Councilman Randy Leonard will discuss how the City of Portland is responding to the budget crunch and how seniors will fair in the end.

For more information, please call Firwood Gardens Residential Care at 503-252-0085.
