SCHOOL CORNER Fir Ridge dance team performs at Rose Garden See the Fir Ridge Step Souljaz Dance Team perform at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11 prior to the Portland Trail Blazer game at the Rose Garden. $5 from the sale of each ticket will be donated to the Fir Ridge Dance Team. Discounted tickets are available. Tickets in the blue section are $52, down from $71, yellow section tickets are $40, down from $49, and purple section tickets are only $18, down from $24. Questions can be directed to the school office at 503-256-6530. Sacramento to celebrate Earth Day On Wednesday, April 18 at 9:45 a.m., Sacramento Elementary School, 11400 N.E. Sacramento St., will celebrate Earth Day with a variety of activities. A dedication of the new campus garden will include recognition of volunteers and community supporters who were instrumental in its completion. April 18 is also Walk and Bike to School Day at Sacramento. It is held in conjunction with Shape Up Across Oregon, a program sponsored by the Oregon Governors Council on Physical Fitness. These events combine to promote healthy communities and healthy students. Parents, neighbors and community members are invited and encouraged to attend. Skidmore St., will celebrate the culmination of its first year as a preschool through seventh grade institution. The Parkrose and Gateway communities have been very supportive of this low-cost Christian alternative school. When OSCS first started six years ago, it offered preschool only with no real plans to expand. But due to the support of parents and the community, OSCS took the plunge, registered with the state of Oregon, and included all but the eighth grade this year. Plans are under way for next year to offer complete preschool-8th grade curriculums. As the school continues to grow, small class sizes typically 12 students per class and its family-friendly environment will remain. Early registration for preschool Resurrection Lutheran Preschool is now accepting registrations for the 2007-08 school year. The 3-year-old class meets on Tuesday and Thursday, and the 4-year-old class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Classes are held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The preschool program focuses on providing a nurturing environment and learning experience to promote self-esteem and self-confidence, creativity, language development, cognitive skills, fine and gross motor skills, and social skills. Market St., is now accepting preschool registrations for the 2007-08 school year. The preschool program is for children who will be 3 or 4 years of age by Sept. 1, 2007. Preschool operates from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Classes for 3-year-olds are two days a week on Tuesday and Thursday. There are two options available for 4-year-olds. They can sign up for three days a week and attend on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or opt to attend all week, Monday-Friday. For families who may need them, extended hours until 1 p.m. are available through the Lunch Bunch program every day except Friday. MEETINGS Property maintenance rules to be discussed The presentation and discussion topic for the monthly Brown Bag Lunch and Learn session offered by the city of Portland Bureau of Development Services will be Property Maintenance Regulations Program. Attendees will learn about Title 29 property maintenance regulations. Enforcement, overview, basic requirements and the complaint process will be on the agenda. Forum announced to discuss proposed change in city government Mayor Tom Potter and Commissioner Randy Leonard have agreed to participate in an exchange of opinions of the Charter Reform Commissions recommendations that will appear on the May 15 ballot, with emphasis primarily on Measure 26-91, Form of Government. The meeting will be held on Monday, April 16 in the Commons at Parkrose High School, 12003 N.E. Shaver St., from 7 to 9 p.m. The meeting is sponsored by four east-side neighborhood coalitions: East Portland Neighborhood Coalition, Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods, Southeast Uplift, and Central Northeast Neighbors, which together cover most of the citys east side. The format will feature a brief description of ballot measures, opening statements by Potter and Leonard, a discussion between the two city leaders, questions from the floor and closing statements. Ballot measure campaign materials will be available at the meeting. Club plans tour of gardens The Flower Lane Garden Club will be going on a field trip this month. Members and interested parties are asked to meet at Club Estates, 12275 S.E. FUNDRAISERS Rummage sale for all-night party Parents and supporters for the David Douglas High School class of 2007 are planning a graduation night party. To raise money they have combed attics and garages to come up with furniture, televisions, computers, shoes, toys, kitchen and household items, and more. Sale will benefit veterans There will be a rummage sale at the American Legion Auxiliary-Unit 1, 1820 S.E. 122nd Ave., on Friday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, April 14 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shoppers will find household items; clean, usable clothes; yard tools; dishes; bed linens and more good stuff. Botanical garden friends hold plant sale On Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Leach Garden Friends will host its annual Spring Plant Sale. More than 20 specialty nurseries will offer unusual shrubs, perennials and Northwest native plants as well as plants propagated from the Leach collection. You will also find garden art, books and items from the Leach Gift Shop. The sale will take place at Floyd Light Middle School, Southeast 108th Avenue and Washington Street, near Mall 205. Admission is free. The proceeds from the sale go toward the care and ongoing maintenance of Leach Botanical Garden. Leach Botanical is a public garden dedicated to the study of botany & horticulture with an emphasis on plants of the Pacific Northwest and an ecologically sensitive approach to gardening. The garden is committed to providing educational opportunities to the public and to maintaining and enhancing the legacy of the gardens founders, Lilla and John Leach.
