Fundraiser with South of the Border flare The David Douglas Educational Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities for students in all David Douglas schools. The annual dinner/auction is the foundations major fundraiser each year. This years auction, South of the Border, will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel, 8235 N.E. Airport Way. This event brings together the entire David Douglas community for an evening of fun and fundraising. Auction items for silent and oral auctions include trips, dinners at gourmet restaurants and much, much more. Individual tickets are available for $40. You may choose to sponsor a table of eight for $320. Parkrose alum encouraged to attend auction The Parkrose Education Foundation will be Rolling Out the Red Carpet at its fourth annual dinner and auction on Saturday, April 28. Community members, Parkrose High graduates and neighborhood supporters are invited to enjoy dinner, entertainment and both a silent and a live auction at the Holiday Inn Airport hotel, 8439 N.E. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. Alumni are encouraged to purchase a table for eight, fill it with classmates, and relive some of that Bronco spirit with competitive bidding at the live auction. Art Linkletter to speak Portland Christian Schools will hold its third annual Dinner Celebration on Saturday, April 28 at 7 p.m. at the Portland Airport Embassy Suites Hotel, 7900 N.E. 82nd Ave. The featured guest will be legendary radio and television icon Art Linkletter. A star in show business for more than 60 years, Linkletter has lifted our spirits through radio, television and print. A true master of the podium, he has inspired thousands of audiences during his prolific speaking career. A three-time Emmy Award winner including the 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award Linkletter is probably best known for his performances in two of the longest running shows in broadcast history: House Party (25 years) and People are Funny (19 years). Linkletter has also brought Americans his insightful humor through 23 books, including Kids Say the Darndest Things, one of the top 14 best sellers in American publishing history. His most recent book How to Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life was released in July of 2006 and was co-authored with Mark Victor Hansen. A strong believer in wholesome entertainment, Linkletter is a longtime supporter of Christian education. He serves on the Board of Regents at Pepperdine University and has received the Don Gardner Christian Servant Award, the highest honor of the National Christian School Association. Tickets are $45. All monies raised will benefit the PCS $250,000 Murdock Charitable Trust Matching Grant for the Market Street Arts Building Capital Campaign. All will have the opportunity to invest in the ministry of PCS at the event. The goal is to go over the top for the matching grant. Celebrate the great Northwest at benefit The Serendipity Centers seventh annual benefit at the Portland Art Museum is Thursday, May 3. Enjoy the Northwest exhibits at the museum, dine on cuisine of the Pacific Northwest, and listen to local musical entertainment. The Serendipity Center is a therapeutic school for at-risk kids. Community programs to benefit from sale The Parkrose Community United Church of Christ, 4715 N.E. 106th Ave., will host a gently used sale on Friday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Proceeds from the sale will benefit community programs for youth, seniors and low-income residents. EVENTS Family fun at EPCC East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave., hosts a family night on the first three Fridays of each month from now through Friday, May 18. On Friday, April 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., a special Latino family night is planned. Celebrate Latino culture with live music, dance, games and crafts. All ages are welcome. Take a guided garden tour Public tours continue at the Leach Botanical Garden on Saturday mornings at 10:00. The first Saturday of each month is the Gardeners Tour led by Leach Botanical Gardens garden steward, Scotty Fairchild. Garden volunteers will lead the remaining Saturday tours. April tours will focus on blossoming shrubs and woody plants. The May feature is woodland perennials, and in June guides will teach about riparian habitat.
