Making a difference for women since 1921 Soroptimists are women of all ages, cultures and ethnic groups. Members represent a wide array of professions, including doctors, attorneys, teachers, chief executive officers of companies, business owners and government officials. A Soroptimist is a leader in her community. She believes that by joining with other women and engaging in awareness, advocacy and action in the service of her community and society, she can make the world a better place for humankind. The Soroptimists of Portland East is the Mid-County chapter that works together to serve less fortunate women and children in the community. This organization blends talents, strengths, and ideas to form a strong network of professionals to imagine and implement projects. Business mixes with pleasure Serving Gateway, Glisan Street, Mall 205, Menlo Park, 111th Square, San Rafael and everything in between, The Gateway Area Business Association (GABA) will meet on Thursday, April 10 at 11:45 p.m. at JJ Norths Grand Buffet, 10520 N.E. Halsey St. The special guest speaker will be Richard Alley, CEO of Woodland Park Hospital, giving a dissertation on The Resurgence of Woodland Park Hospital. Fun activities combined with community service The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) is an American institution dedicated to serving local communities. As a member of this order, the Gateway Elks Lodge supports numerous community activities and charitable services. The Gateway Lodge provides community-recycling facilities for newspaper, used cardboard and clean glass. The newspaper drop box is located east of the Lodge building at 711 N.E. 100th Ave. The glass and cardboard bins are located near the north fence in the overflow parking area. The Veterans Committee is the hard-working recyclers and they use the proceeds from the sale of recycled material for the benefit of our hospitalized veterans. Regular lodge meetings are held on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. at the Gateway Lodge. Service above self Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the communitys business and professional men and women. The worlds Rotary clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. The main objective of Rotary is service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of todays most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty, hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, other professionals, and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self. Mid-County is served by two local Rotary chapters. Attend a meeting to learn how you can become involved. The political process Whether youre interested in voter information, civic participation, or current public policy issues such as election reform, campaign finance reform and health care, the League of Women Voters is for you. This nonpartisan political organization encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy.
