The MEMO Calendar is your vehicle to publicize community events. Let your Mid-County neighbors know about events of interest, meetings, fundraisers and the like.

SPECIAL EVENTS
Free Tuesday at the Zoo
The Oregon Zoo is recognized internationally for having the most successful breeding herd of Asian elephants of any zoo. In 1962, Packy became the first elephant born in the Western Hemisphere in more than 40 years. Since that time, 27 calves have been born. Three bulls and four cows live there currently, including newest addition, Chendra.

The second Tuesday of every month is designated as Free Tuesday from 1 p.m. until closing. Take this opportunity to see Packy on April 8 from 1 - 4 p.m. and beat the crowds who will arrive a few days later to celebrate his 42nd birthday.

Glendoveer Trail Maintenance Day
Help repair sections of the popular nature trail around Glendoveer Golf Course. Volunteers will be clearing the trail and removing invasive vegetation. Meet at the parking lot at Northeast 148th Avenue and Halsey Street on Thursday, April 10. Clean up crews will be working from 9 - 11 a.m. Bring gloves and your volunteer spirit. Buying and selling real estate in Portland
Lunch and Learn is a City of Portland Bureau of Development Services community education program, held during the lunch hour. Each session explores current development topics in an informal format. They are held on the second floor of the Development Services Center in conference room 2500A at the 1900 S.W. Fourth Ave. building. The programs utilize PowerPoint presentations and promote informal question and answer exchange. Bring your own sack lunch, the Bureau of Development Services provides coffee and cookies only. The events are offered free of charge, and do not require advance reservations.

The next session is scheduled for Friday, April 11 from noon until 1:30 p.m. and will explore what real estate professionals should know about permit research; how to find land use history, current zoning, and allowed uses; and disclosure, liability and legal issues around property sales. City staff and legal experts will be available to answer questions.

Neighborhood Tree Plantings
Friends of Trees educates the public about the importance of the urban forest and what they can do to protect and care for urban trees.

Several planting events are scheduled for Saturday, April 12, in our Mid-County community. You don’t need experience. You don’t need to pre-register. Tools and guidance will be provided. Just come dressed for the weather and ready to plant.

If you are interested in helping, the Parkrose and Argay Terrace plantings are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Register at 8:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 11100 N.E. Skidmore St.. Safety Fair adventures
The third annual Adventures in Safety Fair is on Friday, April 11, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Mid-County Caring Community and Portland Parks and Recreation this event will feature important information that all families should know. The fair will be held at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave., Portland, OR 97216. There will be booths from over 25 local organizations with information about safety and health—from home and tool safety, to nutrition, pet safety, and much more. Booths will have literature, stickers, and prizes. There will also be face painting, jungle “tattoos,” and live entertainment! A hotdog dinner will be available for $2.

Adventures in Safety is a free event and people of all ages are welcome. You won’t want to miss this fun and informative event.

Easter Season Events
Our Savior Lutheran Church, 11100 N.E. Skidmore St., once again offers a host of events to celebrate the Easter season.
Palm Sunday services begin at 10 a.m. on April 13 and feature participation by pre-schoolers. At 11:30 a.m. after church services youngsters aged 2-10 will enjoy the annual Easter Egg Hunt.

On Friday, April 18, participate in a Good Friday Tenebrae worship service beginning at 7 p.m.

Saturday, April 19, the church will host a Multnomah County Immunization Clinic for school required immunizations from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Some adult immunizations will also be available.

An Easter Sunday breakfast will be served from 8:30-9:45 a.m. on Sunday, April 20, followed by a 10 a.m. worship service featuring youth confirmations.

Spaghetti and meatballs
Enjoy the famous St. Rita Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner on Palm Sunday, April 13th, from noon-6 p.m. in the Church Hall at 10029 N.E. Prescott St. Adults - $8; Children under 12 - $4 Takeouts are available. Dinner includes spaghetti with meatballs, salad, bread, coffee or punch. For dessert it’s your choice, a piece of homemade cake or a slice of homemade pie. Wine will be available for an extra charge.

Easter and Holy Week
Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 12505 N.E. Halsey St. invites you to a series of special events in celebration of Easter.

Palm Sunday Worship is at 10 a.m., April 13. The sermon is titled “Sunday Through Thursday,” based on the events leading to the Crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday.

Maundy Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. brings a special service called “Remembering the Upper Room and the Last Supper.” Open Door Fellowship will serve Communion.

The special service scheduled for Good Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m. is “The Crucifixion of Jesus.” The Eastminster Chancel Choir will perform special music. Open Door Fellowship members will be in attendance.
