Free Hospice training
Providence Hospital is offering a free comprehensive course of training to prepare people who are interested in becoming a hospice volunteer.

The class will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 25 to October 28 at Kaiser Permanente Town Hall, 3704 N. Interstate Avenue.

Hospice volunteers help people who are facing terminal illness. The training course covers the basic principals of hospice, understanding the special needs of patients and their families, effective communications, patient care, pain and symptom management, spiritual care giving, and understanding grief and loss.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. No previous hospice experience is required. Following training, volunteers are asked to commit no more than four hours a week for a year. Among areas volunteers can choose to spend time in are: respite care, bereavement, Me Too & Company - a children’s grief support group, and oncology. The Community Hospice Volunteer Training Coalition is comprised of Providence Portland Hospice, Providence St. Vincent Hospice, Kaiser Permanente Hospice, Legacy VNA Hospice and Hopewell Hospice.

The East Portland Neighborhood Office (EPNO) at 735 S.E. 106th Ave. will put you in touch with your neighborhood association. Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors will hold a Board meeting at 7 p.m. on September 16 at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N. E. Knott. This is a working session of the Board but is an open meeting.

On September 23 PHAN will hold their Fall General meeting. This meeting is at 7 p.m. also at Parkrose United Methodist Church. Elections for six board positions will be held at this meeting. They are: Vice President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Crime prevention representative, Traffic, and Board Member at Large.

City of Maywood Park
The Maywood Park City Council, lead my Mayor Mark Hardie, urges all citizens to get involved in their local government.

Meetings will be held on Tuesday September 9 and 23 at 7 p.m. at Mt. Hood Community College.

If you have an item of new business to present, send it, in writing, to the City Office. New business will be added to the agenda as time permits.

Libraries and your business
The Gateway Area Business Association (GABA) will meet on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 11:45 am. The meeting will be held at the Midland Regional Library, 805 S.E. 122nd and will be catered by Aloha Kona Espresso. SCHOOL CORNER
Parents are partners
Parents and guardians are invited to review their students’ class schedules, meet teachers and advisors at Parkrose High School’s (PHS) annual Back to School Night. The event takes place on Thursday September 25 and the program begins at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

Principal Roy Reynolds encourages families to attend the event. “Parents are our partners,” he explains, “and we really want their support and ideas. In addition, we have more than a dozen new teachers that parents will want to meet and lots of new courses to learn about.”

The PHS Site Council, the governing body guiding school improvement efforts, is seeking another parent representative. Applications are now available at the high school’s main office and will also be available at Back to School Night.

Fall registration at MHCC
Fall term registration is now open for classes that will begin the week of September 22. Continuing and returning students who have attended Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) in the last year may register online or by using Touch-Tone at 403-491-6000.

New students must submit an Admissions Form prior to registration. Check out the MHCC web site at www.mhcc.edu for more information and forms or call the Admissions and Records Office at 503-491-7393.

Students taking six or more credits or taking reading, writing and/or mathematics must take the College Placement Test (CPT) prior to registration. Call 503-491-7638 for testing information.

Transfer students who have completed English composition and mathematics courses, both with ‘C’ or higher grades can bring a copy of their transcripts to the Academic Advising and Transfer Center or fax it to 503-491-7388 so the CPT may be waived.

SENIOR ISSUES
Tuition-free classes at PSU
Portland State University’s Senior Adult Learning Center offers tuition-free classes for senior adults.

Oregon residents who are 65 years of age or older may take courses at Portland State University through the Senior Adult Learning Center and pay no tuition (course fees may apply for some classes).

Fall term classes begin on September 29. Senior auditors do not receive any credit for the classes and they are on a space available basis. Registration for Fall term will officially begin in mid-September. Please call the Senior Adult Learning Center at 403-725-4739 for office hours and registration times.

The senior Adult Learning Center is part of the Institute on Aging at the College of Urban and Public Affairs and located in the Urban Center Building (Room 470H) at Southwest 6th Avenue and Montgomery Street in downtown Portland. The campus is easily accessed by bus and the streetcar.
