Old Shrine Hospital to go, New Columbia Knoll to come

LEE PERLMAN
THE MID-COUNTY MEMO

The long-stalled Columbia Knoll project is back on track, and that means Shriners Hospital is about to go. Shelter Resources has renewed their demolition permit for the 1926 historic structure on Northeast Sandy Boulevard at 82nd Avenue, with plans to salvage a long list of items. In its place they will build a 335-unit housing development on the ten-acre property, featuring a variety of housing types aimed at different populations, plus a small community center to serve them all.

The project was the subject of extended negotiations between the developers and neighborhood groups, and opposition by historic preservationists. Most of the neighborhood leaders declared that the final plans were reasonable, and Shelter Resources were eventually able to satisfy state and federal requirements that they “mitigate” the loss of the building.
