If this lovely flower is your passion, Portland has just the club for you. The African Violet Society can teach you everything you need to grow beautiful, healthy African Violets, as well as other exotic flowers. Meetings often include guest speakers, workshops, or slideshows featuring different types of violets. The Maywood Park City Council meetings are open to the public. They provide the community with the chance to come together and affect their neighborhood. Come find out what is in the works for your area, or make your suggestions for improvements. Maywood Park City Council meetings for June will be held on Tuesday, June 4 and Tuesday, June 18. The meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on the Maywood Park campus of Mt. Hood Community College, 10100 N.E. Prescott St. Meetings are usually located in room 223. Look for the sign in the front window. Be part of the business community The Parkrose Business Association (PBA) invites all area business owners and managers to join them in this months PBA meeting. Each meeting not only keeps you up-to-date on business and neighborhood news, but also includes a guest speaker discussing a topic of interest. In addition to this, each PBA meeting includes a Member Moment, allowing you to learn more about area businesses and available services. It also allows you to educate other business owners about your business when you have a Member Moment. This months speaker will be Duke Shepard, talking about specially designed bus shelters for tri-met in Parkrose. This meeting also features the presentation of a check for $1000 to the recipient of the 2002 Parkrose Scholarship Award. The Member Moment for June will focus on the Portland Tribune, represented by Jason Lesh. The meeting will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, in Steamers Restaurant, 8303 N.E. Sandy Blvd. There will also be a board meeting at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20. Toastmasters International can help you defeat the swarms of butterflies that invade your stomach. Learn to give a presentation at work or a toast at a wedding with equal ease. Toastmasters International can help to learn to be a confident, strong speaker. Toastmasters International meet every Monday at 12:05 p.m. at the Columbia Center, 17650 N.E. A group that makes a difference The Gateway Area Business Association (GABA) will be having another exciting meeting on Thursday, June 13 and they invite all area business owners and managers to come join in. GABA is a great way to meet with other business owners and enjoy some of the many great events sponsored by GABA. Each month features interesting speakers, and an update on Gateway area events. On Thursday, June 13 come and hear guest speakers Janine Dunphy, Health Service Coordinator for Life Line Screening, and Greg Buzzy, Director of Consumer Relations for Care Center East at 11:45 a.m. in JJ Norths Grand Buffet banquet room, 10520 N.E. Halsey St. Janine Dunphy will do a brief presentation on the risk factors, symptoms and prevention of strokes, peripheral artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms and osteoporosis. Many times these diseases can be prevented with early detection. Life Line Screening, the nations leading vascular mobile screening company, will be conducting a screening at the Parkrose Community Center on Monday, June 17. Greg Buzzy will give an introduction to Care Center East and will address the general impression that people have about nursing homes, how abuse issues are raised and how they are addressed, and what to look for when you visit or tour a facility when the need for a placement is necessary for a loved one. He will also briefly cover insurance, the cost of nursing care, and how one can pay for these services privately. Good works and games The Columbia View Kiwanis invites all civic-minded community members to visit their next meeting. The Kiwanis not only support charitable organizations such as Snow-CAP, Loaves and Fishes, and many others, but also enjoy a bingo game every week. Each meeting includes a special program with guest speakers on topics of interest.
