Mid-county MEMO Pad...

The Mid-county Memo is a newspaper dedicated to serving the community. The Memo Pad is a special section dedicated to your accomplishments, births, and celebrations of milestone events. If you have something special to announce or news your neighbors should know, publicize it in the Mid-county Memo Pad.

Submissions for each month are due by the 15th of the previous issue. Please have submissions for July in by Friday, June 14. We prefer e-mailed submissions sent to Dawn Widler, Department Editor at editor@midcountymemo.com. You may also mail complete information to 4052 N.E. 22nd Ave., Portland, OR, 97212-1503, phone 503-287-8094 or fax 503-249-7672.

Rossi Barn Dance seeks volunteers

Time’s up, and no chickening out! The Rossi Farms Barn Dance is back again, and needs you! The annual gala benefit is 6 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, July 13 at the Rossi Farm, N.E. 122nd Ave. and Shaver St. There’ll be dancing to the Last Rodeo Band, the beverage of your choice, and all you can eat baked beans, macaroni, green and potato salad, and fried chicken. There will be lots of fried chicken - last year’s chicken out will not be repeated! Plus, you’ll get to see the world premier of Turkey Creek Production’s “James Prescott and the Legend of Parker Rose,” the sequel to last year’s film, starring people you may recognize.

All this and more is available for $10 - unless you want to help out, in which case it’s free. And of course, once again it’s a benefit for Parkrose youth sports and activities. So let your fingers do the walking to 503-253-5571, and offer to lend a hand.

Tri-Met offers summer youth passes

This summer, Tri-Met is offering youth under 18 the opportunity to buy inexpensive Summer Youth passes either month-by-month or for the whole summer. This gives families the choice between the convenience of buying one pass for the whole summer, or the flexibility of buying each month.

The passes aren’t just good for unlimited rides on MAX and buses. Pass holders also get special deals while the pass is valid. Area sponsors, including McDonald’s, Oaks Park, the Portland Beavers baseball team and Timbers soccer team offer discounts on things kids love: food, music, entertainment and more.

Purchase a Summer Youth Pass at any of the regular Tri-Met outlets, including Fred Meyer, Safeway and most Albertson’s stores. A single three-month pass costs just $48 and is good for unlimited rides during June, July and August, which is less than half the regular monthly fee. Each one-month pass costs just $16 and can be used for a single month in June, July or August. To qualify, you must be 18 or younger. The three-month pass and one-month pass for June went on sale in May, so get yours today! For trip-planning assistance see www.tri-met.org or call 503-238-RIDE weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Help a child and yourself

The Foster Grandparent Program is looking for seniors sixty years and up on a limited income to help at-risk children in Portland. These children need positive role models to help them with reading, developing social skills, and much more. Not only do the foster grandparents get to help out a child, but they also receive two hundred dollars a month tax-free. The program also offers other benefits, including meal and travel compensation, paid time off and sick leave. No experience is necessary, just the desire to better a child’s life. For more information, please call Randy Lucas 503-232-0007 ext. 202.

Help Snow-CAP support our community

Snow-CAP, a Community Action Program, benefits many people in our area. This is made possible by the local volunteers who donate their time or money to help support those less fortunate in the community.

Snow-CAP runs several food and clothing programs for low-income residents of the Mid-County area. These programs have served over 4,000 different families in the last year. This translates to over 65,000 visits for various services. These programs include a shopping style food pantry, produce distribution on Tuesdays, a co-op-type program called Community Basket, a community garden, and a delivery program for low-income seniors called Food 2 You, as well as much more.

Our community works through volunteers from the community pitching in, providing time and donations to help those less fortunate make it. Assist your community by supporting Snow-CAP. Call 503-674-8785 to volunteer, donate, or for more information about what you can do to help.
