Parkrose Loses Long-time Resident

Cecil E. Vinson died May 6, 2002 in his Parkrose home at the age of 71.

Cecil Vinson, in center of photo in white shirt, is seen with some of his family in 2000. From left to right, granddaughter Kaylee Bither, wife Deloris, granddaughter Erin O’Grady and grandson Conor O’Grady.
Mr. Vinson was born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin on October 14, 1930. As he child, he migrated west with his family when his father sought employment at the aluminum plant in Troutdale. Settling in Wood Village with his parents, Charles and Dorothy (Sweet) Vinson in 1943 in a housing complex known as Fairview Homes, Cec met many of the people who were to become his lifelong friends. While attending Fairview Grade School, he met Deloris Reuter. They were married in 1950.

In May of 1951, Cecil went to work at Portland Gas & Coke, now NW Natural, where he is remembered as Vince. While the bulk of his career was served in the Portland Metro area, he was transferred to Eugene in 1974. He and wife Deloris returned to their Parkrose home in 1987. After 42 years of service to the company, Vince retired in June of 1993.

Renowned for his venison jerky and annual bumper crop of tomatoes, Cec was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and camping, primarily in central and eastern Oregon, and fishing in the high lakes of the Cascade Mountains. He especially cherished time spent in the mountains, forests and grasslands around Mitchell, Oregon.

In addition, Cec enjoyed working on cars. Many Parkrose students from the early 70’s spent time in the garage with him while he helped diagnose and correct problems they were having with their vehicles.

Cecil is survived by his wife, three daughters and sons-in-law; Darlene (PHS-’69) and Tim Curran, Nancy (PHS-’72) and Dennis O’Grady, and Patti Jo (PHS-’74) and Tim Bither (PHS-’74); four grand children; Kaylee, Erin, Conor and Lucas; and a favorite Uncle, Vernon ‘Barney’ Vinson of LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

Remembrances may be sent to Oregon Hunters Association, Ochoco Chapter, P. O. Box 1545, Prineville, OR 97754.
