CHURCHES
Inspirational leader to speak
St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church has announced that the Rev. Irenaeus du Plessis of Belfast, Northern Ireland, will be giving a presentation on Sunday, Jan.14 at 4 p.m. The topic is Orthodox Christianity in Ireland: The Solution to the Protestant-Catholic Conflict. The presentation will take place at the Frank and Margaret Bitar Parish Hall at St. George, 2101 N.E. 162nd Ave. The public is invited.

Father Irenaeus and his wife Genevieve live in Belfast where he is the pastor of the Antiochian Orthodox Church of St. Ignatius. Father Irenaeus is the chairman of the Antiochian Deanery’s Board of Missions and Evangelism and serves on the executive board of the Irish Council of Churches. He and Genevieve are both recent converts to Orthodoxy and believe that the years of interdenominational teaching, training and welfare work among the various Protestant churches as well as the Roman Catholic Church have been God’s way of preparing them and giving them favor with the local fragmented society. Their parish in Belfast is only two years old. It is comprised of former Protestants and former Catholics as well as those who have no previous Christian background, and it has experienced tremendous growth in a very short time.

St. George Church, the oldest Antiochian Orthodox Church on the West Coast, is pleased to bring this inspiring story to Portland. The parish is made up of Christians from countries of the Middle East, such as Lebanon and Syria, as well as many converts to the faith from a variety of nationalities and backgrounds.

For more information about this event of the St. George Antiochian Church, contact Don or Karen West at 503-239-5351.
