Memo Calendar (continued) FUNDRAISERS Concert to fund New York trip In a tip of the hat to an old Charlie Parker tune, the Mt. Hood Community College Music Department is presenting a fundraising jazz concert titled Scrapple to the Apple. The concert will feature four outstanding jazz groups that have all been invited to perform at the International Association of Jazz Educations annual conference in New York. Joining the MHCC vocal jazz group Genesis, directed by Dave Barduhn, and the MHCC Jazz Band, directed by Susie Jones, are the Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra and the Pacific Crest Jazz Combo, both directed by Thara Memory. The evening will include a special performance by internationally acclaimed jazz singer Nancy King. This will be the seventh appearance for Genesis and the third for the MHCC Jazz Band to perform at IAJE conference. The Pacific Crest groups are making their first trip an amazing accomplishment as they are only in their second year of existence. The concert will be held Thursday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the MHCC College Theater, located at 26000 S.E. Stark St. in Gresham. General admission tickets are $8 and $5 for students and may be purchased at the door or from any group member. Proceeds from the event will help in the transportation costs for the New York trip. Prom for those who missed it the first time On Saturday, Feb. 10, the Portland East club of Soroptimist International is hosting a Second Time Around Prom dance fundraiser at the Norse Hall, 111 N.E. 11th Ave. East Coast swing dance lessons start at 7:15 p.m. This is a prom for adults to relive those awkward high school moments; long-time wallflowers, this is your chance to bloom. If you had a bad prom experience, or maybe no prom experience, heres your chance. Dress up in your best vintage suit, get your best companion to pull out an old prom dress or that last horrible bridesmaid dress, and enjoy a fun evening of dancing, raffles and refreshments, all as a fundraiser for Soroptimist International of Portland Easts 2007 Womens Opportunity Awards program. Soroptimist is an international service organization that works to better the lives of women and children. These unique awards help change the lives of women by improving their employment prospects through education and skills training. The women, who provide the primary source of financial support for their families, often overcome tremendous hardships including domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse, and poverty. Club recipients of the award become eligible for additional cash awards at other levels of the organization, including three $10,000 finalist awards. THE ARTS Holiday season concludes with concert Experience the annual Epiphany Choir Fest on Sunday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. Knott St. This is a combined performance by local church choirs as they gather to sing some old favorites as a way to bring the holiday season to a close. The afternoon will conclude with a combined rendition of Handels Hallelujah Chorus. Offerings will be accepted on behalf of the DayBreak Shelter Network. Enjoy light classical music by local talent The East County Orchestra will present a Winter Concert of popular and light classical selections on Friday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. No admission fee is charged, but donations are accepted. Rep brings drama of Vietnam vets to life Mt. Hood Repertory Theatre Company continues its seventh season of Readers Theatre titled Down Through the Decades, featuring great plays from each decade. Readers Theatre is a relaxed and entertaining medium in which the areas finest professional actors use the words of the play, their voices, and the audiences imagination to bring these stories to life on the stage. In January, the Rep will present the 1970s with Strange Snow, by Stephen Metcalf, directed by Patrick Wohlmut. The years of war, social realignment and presidential impeachment proceedings give rise to this award-winning drama of two young Vietnam veterans and their harrowing readjustment to civilian life. Strange Snow will be read at the Reynolds Middle School Theatre, 1200 N.E. 201st Ave in Fairview, on Monday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7. Thespians perform for younger set Come see Imagination Creation, starring the Parkrose High School Theatre Helpables, in No Couch Potatoes Allowed. This is an original, free production geared for kids from 5 to 10 years of age. The show focuses on teaching kids in a fun way about living a healthy lifestyle through stories, songs and dances. Free cookies and time with the actors will follow this lively 40-minute presentation on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Parkrose High Theater, 12003 N.E. EVENTS Be prepared for a major disaster The East Portland Community Center will offer three workshops addressing disaster preparedness for families. Sponsoring and leading the workshops is Central Mid-County NETs, an all-volunteer group active in the Hazelwood, Mill Park and Centennial neighborhoods. Working under the auspices of Portlands Neighborhood Emergency Team unit in the Portland Office of Emergency Management, the CMC NETs promote household and neighborhood readiness to cope with potential major disasters through outreach, education and participation. Families and individuals are encouraged to attend. Topics are appropriate for ages 13 and older. Participants will learn how to reduce the traumatic impact of disaster; assemble emergency food and medical kits for home and auto; make family action and communication plans; safeguard vital documents; meet special needs of children, elderly and family pets; and get involved with more training and volunteer activities. The January and March workshops are 90 minutes each. In February an intensive workshop, held on two Saturdays, will cover topics in more depth and encourage participants to get started on disaster readiness plans and preparations. Dates and times are as follows: Wednesday, Jan. 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Cost per family is $5 for supplies. Saturday, Feb. 10 and 17 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Cost per family for supplies is $10. Wednesday, March 14 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Also $5 per family. All workshops will he held at East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106 Ave. Register by calling EPCC at 503-823-3450. Volunteer at Stewardship Saturdays The Columbia Slough Watershed Council invites volunteers of all ages to Stewardship Saturdays, a new monthly program. Stewardship Saturdays run every second Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. until noon. Diverse groups of volunteers are working to improve habitat within the Columbia Slough Watershed through a variety of activities, including invasive species removal, native tree planting, trail maintenance and more. Join a work party on Jan. 13 to perform necessary maintenance on the Lewis & Clark Garden at Whitaker Ponds, 7040 N.E. 47th Ave., including removal of invasive plants, cutbacks of native perennials and re-gravelling the trail. Your help is needed to keep the garden beautiful. On Feb. 10, help re-plant native trees at Ramsey Refugia, an important floodplain wetland habitat located in North Portland. In preparation for further salmonoid habitat improvements, young native ash trees need to be dug up and moved to a different site on the property. Come prepared for mud. The Columbia Slough Watershed Council is a diverse group of neighbors, property owners, businesses, environmental groups, recreation advocates and government agencies who work to restore and enhance the 60 miles of waterways, wetlands and slow-moving channels known as the Columbia Slough. Madison High to host Fix-It Fair The Fix-It Fair is a free city of Portland event connecting residents with money-saving, environmentally-friendly resources and activities. Exhibitors and hourly workshops offer practical, expert information on such topics as gardening, home health and safety, and energy conservation. Plus there will be prize drawings for compact fluorescent light bulbs, gift certificates to local stores, carbon monoxide detectors and more. Burgerville will provide free lunches, and all-day, on-site professional childcare will be available.
