Join an active club
The Gateway Elks offer the chance to help others in the community, such as youth and veterans, as well as an opportunity to improve the Gateway area. Get results you can see reflected in the community.

Elk membership also opens new social doors. The Lodge is constantly having functions of all sorts, from sporting events on the big screen TV to fairs and picnics. Events for February include the Elkettes Sweetheart Ball on Friday, Fed. 14 and the Disabled Dance on Friday, Feb. 21 as well as the regular lodge meetings on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. held at the Gateway Elks Lodge, 711 N.E. 100th Ave.

The Elks offer the public the chance to support groups through recycling. Donate to the paper recycling drop-box in the Lodge parking lot to help the Youth Activities Fund, supporting groups such as our area Boy Scout troops. Donate colored glass and cardboard at the recycle donation area on the north side of the Lodge in the RV parking lot to help support veterans in hospitals.

If you are interested in being a part of charitable projects and having a lot of fun, consider joining the Elks - the club welcomes both men and women. For more information, please call 503-255-6535. You can also e-mail secretary@gatewayelks.org or visit www.gatewayelks.org.

Get ready for the future
College-bound students and their families will meet with admissions representatives from more than thirty colleges at the fourth annual East Portland College Fair. The evening event, co-sponsored by Parkrose High School and Portland Christian High School, is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 6. Admission is free to the College Fair, held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Parkrose High School, 12003 N.E Shaver St.

Mid-County students and their families can expect to meet representatives from Oregon’s state universities, local community colleges and private colleges from Oregon, Washington and California. College admissions officers will staff information tables at Parkrose High School’s Student Center and be available to answer specific questions. The Fair also includes a series of breakout sessions on topics such as scholarships, SAT preparation, financial aid, and the college selection process. Jim Farmer, a counselor at Portland Christian High School, emphasized that public, private and home-schooled students are all invited to attend the fair.

“I encourage juniors and sophomores to attend the College Fair,” says Meg Kilmer, the Career Center Director at Parkrose High School. “This is a great time for younger students to begin researching their options. Of course, seniors are also welcome, but we know that many of them have already made their decisions.”

An updated list of colleges planning to attend the event is available from either high school. Meg Kilmer can be reached at Parkrose High School, 503-408-2681. Jim Farmer at Portland Christian High School is available at 503-256-3960.
