Senior Resources
Helping to educate and protect seniors
Elders in Action is a group that works to ensure that the needs of local seniors and people with disabilities are met. The Elders in Action commission advocates senior’s rights and advises government agencies such as the Department of Aging and Disability Services. The commission also works to achieve beneficial legislation for seniors focusing on the areas of transportation for homebound seniors, housing, nutrition and health care. They provide needed services and strive to educate seniors about their rights.

Participate in a meeting of the commission, which has been a strong voice for seniors for over 30 years. The Elders in Action Commission invites interested citizens to join them on Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in the Patton Home, 4619 N. Michigan in Portland. For more information about the meeting or Elders in Action, please call 503-823-5269.

Free services available
The Senior Services Program Office helps support seniors by providing free workshops, health checks and clinics. Call the Senior Services Program Office for a complete list of services. Regular programs include a free law clinic every Friday with half-hour consultations.

Medicare advice is available as well, through Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA). Volunteers help both seniors and people with disabilities to understand their rights, make informed choices on how to receive their benefits, and file claims and appeals. Appointments are required.

The Senior Services Program Office is located in the East Portland Community Center at 740 S.E. 106th Ave. For more information about available programs or to schedule an appointment, please call 503-988-6073.
