Competition, camaraderie and hoops at Mid-County gym

Every Friday night for over ten years a group of friends and acquaintances take over the gymnasium at Portland Christian High School. Pick-up games of full and half court basketball are played from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Mid-County resident Randy Frederick and others play at the gym for fun, exercise and fellowship. Frederick and friends pay four dollars apiece to rent the floor from Portland Christian and have been “sweating it up,” as Frederick says, for more than ten years. “On an average night we get anywhere from six to sixteen people.” Frederick explained, “In summers there have been as few as four, and in winters as many as twenty players.” Frederick continues, “I love it, I’m not a young guy anymore, but I love the competition and need the exercise.” Frederick says. “The gym floor is kept in great shape and the staff at Portland Christian have been nice to let us come here year after year.” Athleticism runs in Frederick’s family. Not only did Frederick play four years of varsity sports in the seventies at Benson Tech, but also his son Jason was a state track champion while attending David Douglas High School.
