SCHOOL CORNER
Youth wrestling
The David Douglas Mat Club is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 14. The season will run from November through February. Practice and signups begin on Monday, Nov. 3. Practices are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the David Douglas High School south gym, 1500 S.E. 130th Ave.

League tournaments will be held on Saturdays. Registration fee is $70. Bring your wrestler, his or her wrestling shoes and practice gear. No street shoes are allowed on the mats. A water bottle is recommended. No pop, juice or sports drinks are permitted in the wrestling room.

If you have any high school or college wrestling experience, please offer to help coach. More coaches will provide a better experience for these young wrestlers. All coaches must pass a background check.

Sign up for Scots Jr. Cheer Camp
Registration forms are due by Friday, Nov. 7 for the Nov. 15 David Douglas Scots Jr. Cheer Camp. Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Floyd Light Middle School, 10800 S.E. Washington St. These junior cheerleaders will cheer at Night with the Scots on Tuesday, Nov. 25.

Night with the Scots
Meet and support the David Douglas High School varsity basketball team on Tuesday, Nov. 25 in the DDHS north gym, 1001 N.E. 135th Ave., from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This free evening will include varsity scrimmages, cheerleaders, The Tams, Little Dribblers, a staff game, lip-synching, three-point shootouts, lots of prizes and much, much more.

Signs in the city
The city of Portland Bureau of Development Services wants you to know the codes and regulations behind signage. The monthly Lunch and Learn brown bag discussion on Friday, Nov. 14, 1900 S.W. 4th Ave, Room 2500-A, will provide an overview. Participate in the debate over electrical signs versus non-electrical signs and learn about the permit application process, and complaint and compliance procedures. Bring a lunch. The meeting is free.

Agendas include university, children and neighborhoods
Russellville Kiwanis invites members of the community to join the group for lunch any Tuesday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Refectory Restaurant, 1618 N.E. 122nd Ave. The Nov. 4 meeting is a board meeting. On Nov. 11, guest Johnnie Dreissner will discuss Concordia University: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Mona Fuerstenau will discuss how to support families whose children experience disabilities on Nov. 18. Brian Hoop of the city of Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement will offer an update on area neighborhood associations on Nov. 25.

Group prepares for Irish president visit
The next meeting of the All-Ireland Cultural Society will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Oregon Stamp Society Building, 4828 N.E. 33rd Ave. The group is preparing for the December visit of the president of Ireland, Mary McAleese. To learn more call 503-286-4812.

Conservation district meeting at new home office
The East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, which includes all of Multnomah County east of the Willamette River, will hold its regular monthly board of directors meeting on Monday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. in the district’s new office, Conservation Corner, 5211 N. Williams Ave. The meeting agenda will include discussion of the annual work plan preparation, district fiscal policies update, reviews of watershed council funding, consideration of grant applications and other items of business. Reduce toxins in your home and garden
Flower Lane Garden Club will meet Tuesday, Nov. 18 in the atrium at East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. l06th Ave., at 10 a.m. The program will be on beneficial insects. Guest speaker Sally Fisher, a specialist from the Clark County Washington Solid Waste Program, will discuss the reduction of toxins in the home and garden. Deputy district attorney to speak
Do you think there is a drug house in your neighborhood? Do you suspect criminal activity in your area? You can be involved in closing these places down and cleaning up your community.

Deputy District Attorney J. R. Ujifusa will speak about what community warrants are and how you can help ensure their success at the monthly East Precinct Involved Citizen meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the East Precinct Community Room, 737 S.E. 106th Ave., from 6 to 8 p.m. All East Precinct residents, friends and neighbors are invited.

Learn about floral design
The ABCs of floral design will be presented by Villa Garden Club at its meeting on Thursday, Nov. 20. Speakers will be Evelyn Mell and Leona McDonald, who are both certified flower show judges. They will share and demonstrate tips and techniques they have gathered from their vast range of experiences.

APNBA director is guest
The new executive director of the Alliance of Portland Neighborhood Business Associations, Jon Turino, will be the guest speaker on Thursday, Nov. 20 at the Parkrose Business Association general membership meeting. Michael Taylor of ACE Academy will speak during the Member Moment portion of the meeting. The meeting and buffet lunch begin at 11:30 a.m. at Quality Inn & Suites, 9727 N.E. Sandy Blvd.

CHURCHES
Advent celebration, carolers and puppets
Attend a free community Advent Festival on Sunday, Dec. 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Southeast 117th Avenue and Market Street. A worship service is at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch at 11:45 a.m., Dickens Carolers at 12:30 p.m., puppet shows at 1 and 3:30 p.m., and crafts and holiday decorations from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. These activities are suitable for all ages. Participate in some or all of them as you choose.

The Grotto continues holiday tradition
The Grotto’s 21st annual Christmas Festival of Lights will welcome all who seek the true spirit of Christmas from Friday, Nov. 28 through Tuesday, Dec. 30 from 5 to 9:30 p.m., except Christmas Day. Through the presentation of spectacular lights, hourly music concerts, outdoor caroling and other family entertainment, The Grotto’s festival surrounds visitors with the traditional sights and sounds of this wondrous holiday season.

General admission tickets are $7.50; tickets for children ages 3 to 12 are $3 and children two and under are admitted free. The Grotto is located at Northeast 85th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard. For more information call 503-254-7371.

Morning of prayer
Join Father Ignatius Kissel and Sister Val Lewandoski for The Grotto’s Advent retreat on Saturday, Nov. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon. The theme of this retreat will be waiting and hoping in darkness and silence; it is being called a morning of prayer in preparation for advent. The fee for this half-day retreat is $10. It’s lutefisk time
The renowned Grieg Lodge annual Lutefisk & Meatball Dinner is right around the corner. Hundreds of pounds of prime lutefisk have been spotted in their annual migration to the Norse Hall. Kick off the holiday season with a daylong celebration of Scandinavian food, fellowship and fun, including the Scholarship Benefit Rummage Sale & Bucket Raffle and the Swedish Bake Sale.

Norse Hall is located at 111 N.E. 11th Ave. Scheduled seatings are noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9. The menu includes lutefisk, meatballs, homemade lefse, potatoes, coleslaw, cranberry relish and flatbrod, prune pudding, white sauce and coffee or tea. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 5 to 12.

Spaghetti dinner for senior party
To provide this year’s crop of Parkrose High graduating seniors with a safe and sober graduation party, the PHS Senior All Night Party committee is hosting a spaghetti dinner on Friday, Nov. 21 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the PHS commons, 12003 N.E. Shaver St.
