HOLIDAY BAZAARS Visit Santas shop The annual St. Rita Catholic Church Fall Festival and Bazaar is set for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7 and 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. New vendors will be featured as well as a boutique, baked goods, fresh produce and a Santas Secondhand Shop. Bazaar supports vets The American Legion Auxiliary, Portland Unit 1, 1830 S.E. 122nd Ave., will hold its annual holiday bazaar on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7 and 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect to find baked goods and handcrafted items. Proceeds benefit veterans and youth programs. Womens association sponsors bazaar The St. Therese Parish Holiday Bazaar is Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8. The event begins with the traditional sparkling punch evening on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. On Saturday, the bazaar hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. View and enjoy the talents of many craftspeople as well as traditional baked goods, used books, a movie and music corner, and wonderful raffle items along with snacks and luncheon delights. St. Therese Multi-Purpose Center is located at Northeast 132nd Avenue and Halsey Street. Pretty Kitty Holiday Bazaar The House of Dreams Cat Shelter event features handmade gifts for people and pets, pre-owned holiday items, a silent auction and a raffle. The event is Saturday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 12100 N.E. Prescott St. Its a Dickens of a Christmas Saturday, Nov. 15 is the date for the annual St. Matthews Episcopal Church Holiday Bazaar. Its a Dickens of a Christmas begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. in the parish hall, 11229 N.E. Prescott St. As is tradition, a large handmade quilt in the Pacific Northwest star pattern will be raffled. There will be other hand-quilted items, hand-embroidered dish towels, hand-crafted holiday décor, baby gifts, afghans, aprons, handbags and pet gifts lovingly made by members of the church. There are no commercial vendors at this bazaar. You will also find baked goods, jams, chutneys, syrups, candies and pickles. These gifts are perfect for adding a homey touch to your gift-giving. Handmade items a specialty Shop for handmade blankets, quilts, jewelry, soap and baked goods at the Rose City Nazarene Bazaar, 7016 N.E. Sandy Blvd., on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch is available all day. Lunch and shopping The East Portland Community Center Holiday Bazaar is Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 740 S.E. 106th Ave. Shoppers will find 50 tables of items and a raffle, while Loaves & Fishes will serve lunch for a nominal fee. DDHS PTSA Holiday Bazaar Mark your calendars for the 12th annual David Douglas High School Parent Teacher Student Association Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The bazaar will be held in the north-building cafeteria, 1001 S.E. 135th Ave., and will feature local crafts, holiday decorations, baked goods, glasswork and pottery, and gift baskets. THE ARTS Slam Jam V coming up Be at Fir Ridge Campus, 11215 S.E. Market St., on Wednesday, Nov. 5 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for live, original poetry from staff, students and poets from the community at Slam Jam V. Slam refers to a spoken word competition in which judges are randomly selected from the audience to score performing artists. Poets compete in two rounds and are scored according to their writing and performance. This spoken word poetry event is open to the community. Everyone is welcome, and the event is free. EVENTS Girls chess tournament Chess for Success is hosting a statewide all girls chess tournament for girls from 5 to 13 years of age on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Harriet Tubman Leadership Academy for Young Women, 2231 N. Flint Ave. The format will be the same as the regional tournaments, with team and individual scoring. It is not a qualifier for the state tournament. Groundwater 101 workshop Join the Portland Water Bureau and the Columbia Slough Watershed Council on Saturday, Nov. 15 for Groundwater 101, a free workshop that will teach you groundwater basics including some local geology and hydrology, what role groundwater plays in our drinking water system and what needs to be done to protect this important resource. This workshop is casual in a classroom-style setting and taught by groundwater experts. It will run from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at NECA-IBEW Electrical Center, 16021 N.E. Airport Way. NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION MEETINGS Cultural awareness workshop Central Northeast Neighbors is hosting a cultural awareness workshop on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 4415 N.E. 87th Ave. Participants will learn how to engage culturally diverse communities from the perspective of Latino, Native American, Slavic, Somali and Vietnamese community leaders. This workshop is a continuation of the 2007-08 CNN Cultural Awareness Workshop Series and part of the Cully-Concordia Community Assessment Action Plan formerly know as the Schools, Families, Housing Assessment. Five diverse community leaders will each lead a panel presentation on meaningful ways to reach and connect with their communities. Following the presentations, participants will be invited to ask questions of the panel and explore ways to engage the unique voices of underrepresented neighbors. Refreshments will be provided.
