When June and Oscar Bauer opened their first salon in the Gateway Shopping Center in 1957, they had no idea their children would be part of the business 50 years later.

Mr. Oscar Hair Stylist is thriving in its latest location yet at 11424 N.E. Halsey St. in the Gateway business district.

June and Oscar married in 1948 after meeting and graduating from Portland Beauty Academy. June had moved to Portland from Saskatchewan, Canada, and Oscar had come from North Dakota.

The couple owned and operated a succession of three salons in the Gateway Shopping Center, each one larger than the previous. Oscar was the driving force behind the successes and was in charge of advertising, continuing education and generally promoting the salon. June taught color classes and promoted chemical services. The salon is still known for its expertise in hair coloring.

June and Oscar traveled throughout the United States and Canada attending educational seminars and advanced training classes as both students and teachers. The two were active members of the Oregon Fashion Committee and the National Cosmetology Association, participating in many hairstyling competitions over the years.

Oscar was a disciplined, structured and professional man. He welcomed the couple’s children into the business; however, June admitted she was somewhat shocked when all the children quit their jobs to get involved in the family business in the 1970s.

Oscar passed away in 1983 and was inducted into the Cosmetology Hall of Fame posthumously in 1987. June remains with her children at the salon, where she’s proud to say three generations of the Bauer family either work or plan to work in the salon.

Mark Bauer was the first to join the salon in 1975 after working in the construction industry. Warren Bauer was next after being a helicopter logger. Renee Bauer Lippelgoos joined in 1977 after traveling the east coast as an airline flight attendant. Greg Bauer was the last of Oscar and June’s children to join in 1980 after being in the paint business. Marie, Warren’s wife, joined the team in 1989 as a nail technician.

Warren and Marie purchased the salon from June in 1994. Currently there are 10 stylists at the salon, including Warren, Renee and Greg.

Within the last two years, the salon has seen a complete remodel with new stations, colors and furniture.

Warren said he’s proud to be a Paul Mitchell Focus Salon, which means Mr. Oscar Hair Stylist is recognized as the highest level of salons. The staff is all educated in Paul Mitchell hair styling and product use.

The salon is full service, offering progressive and innovative hair cutting, hair coloring and highlighting, along with permanent waving and formal long hair design.

Warren and Renee have been national educators for Paul Mitchell for the past 10 years. Warren is a senior associate haircut trainer, and Renee specializes in long hair styling.

Members of the third generation of Bauers are either in the hairstyling business or are preparing to become involved in the business, including Greg’s daughters, Ashley and Haley, and Warren and Marie’s children, Jenna and Michael.
