HEATHER HILL
FOR THE MID-COUNTY MEMO

This month we celebrate three thirty-year careers of service to our community. With dedication, hard work and commitment to quality, they have passed the test of time and earned our praise.

As always, we invite our readers to contact us with recommendations for outstanding companies or employees you think deserve credible mention in the Memo.

Edelen Custom Exteriors: 30 years of service

With unsurpassed variety and selection and with local sales and service staff on hand, Edelen Custom Exteriors has helped renovators customize their homes for over 30 years. Edelen co-owners, from left, Steve Hunt, Gene Hogan and David Woodchurch, talk about showroom changes while former owners Denny and Joyce Edelen listen.

In today’s car culture, garage doors serve as the main entrance to many homes. For Edelen Custom Exteriors, they inspired a business that has expanded to supply everything any home remodeler might need in the way of quality custom exteriors.

What started in 1977 out of Denny Edelen’s home now boasts two locations and over 50 employees. Expansion began in 1989 when Edelen added Anderson Windows to its garage door repertoire, the popularity of which bolstered business and inspired diversification. Milgard Windows and Simpson Door Company products followed. Now customers flock to Edelen Custom Exteriors, 700 N.E. 102nd Ave., for everything from skylights and vinyl siding to fencing and decks.

Ambition and proliferation cannot clinch success without high standards for performance and durability. The three co-owners as of 2004 — Steve Hunt, Gene Hogan and David Woodchurch — tour manufacturing plants to verify the craftsmanship of each product Edelen carries. Respecting each homeowner’s individual tastes, the company’s showroom displays metalwork and glass alternatives to each template, with plenty of informed sales staff ready to assist. The service extends beyond the sale, with Edelen’s trained installers on hand to complete the job in compliance with manufacturers’ specifications. To ensure satisfaction, Edelen Custom Exteriors guarantees all installations for a minimum of one year.

As hobbies or investments, home renovations have skyrocketed, encouraging the do-it-yourself media to oblige with ideas and challenging Edelen to cater to discerning customers. Today, classic wood is in, and the elegant Marvin and Anderson wood windows and Simpson doors meet the high demand. In contrast, the sleek metal-framed glass garage doors have cropped up as innovative room dividers for modern spaces.

At the moment, Edelen’s trio of owners are satisfied with their variety and scope, as you’ll see in the renovated Westside showroom reopening this fall, a fine showcase to mark 30 years in business.
