East Portland Neighborhood Grants awarded

LEE PERLMAN
THE MID-COUNTY MEMO

The East Portland Neighborhood Office has awarded a total of $19,594 to nine organizations under the city’s new Neighborhood Small Grants Program.

The grants are part of a citywide effort under which a total of $200,000 is being distributed to community groups through the city’s seven district coalitions and neighborhood offices. The grants are intended for projects that will “expand the capacity” of associations, create partnerships between neighborhood associations and other community groups, and reach out to “under-represented communities” such as immigrants.

The awards were:
$3,500 to the Argay Neighborhood Association to increase interaction between renters and homeowners, local businesses and churches.

$3,500 to Friends of Trees to plant trees in neighborhoods with the smallest canopies and the most need.

$1,200 to the Russell Neighborhood Association for signs at schools and parks showing park rules in multiple languages.

$2,000 to East Portland Neighbors to expand its East Portland Neighborhood News — increase its circulation and increase business coverage.

$894 to the Franciscan Montessori Earth School for creating an “edible fence” made of grape vines along the borders of the property as a community project.

$2,200 to Jane’s Park Group to create a Web site about the Midland Library Park (developed in memory of the late Jane Baker) in multiple languages.

$2,300 to the Midway Business Association for providing information to local businesses and neighborhood associations — discounts to 1,000 households, and promotions to Spanish- and Russian-speaking households.

$2,750 to Russell Academy to provide outreach to Russian- and Spanish-speaking families, including information about local neighborhood associations.

$1,250 to the Wilkes Community Group to support and expand its holiday display contest.
EPNO will be distributing another $14,400 in a second round this spring. Grant applications will be accepted between Jan. 2 and Feb. 5. For more information call 503-823-4500 or visit http://www.portlandonline.com/oni/; under the My Neighborhood section, click on the Neighborhood Small Grants Program link.
